Do I need New Ignition Coils?

I decided to change the plugs on my starboard engine as I noticed it was running kind of rough. The RPM's were about 500 lower than the other side and would surge back to normal intermittently.

The coil came out pretty easily, but when I pulled the plug out, I noticed the tip of the spark plug was stuck in the coil. The second plug did the same thing so I stopped. Is there anyway to take it apart or remove the spark plug tip without damaging the coil? Do I just buy a new coil? Could this be why it was running rough? These are the original coils dated 2005.

Stuck like welded together OR stuck as in hard to separate? I usually have to give mine a swift tug up to get them to remove from the plugs. When was the last time you changed the plugs?

Are you referring to the spark plug cap that unscrews? On these engines it is necessary to get a plug that has the screwed on tips then take them off and discard them for insertion into the coil.

If the top of the plug just has a threaded screw piece on top it is correct. If unsure post pictures of what you have and we'll get things straitened out.

This was the first time I had changed them. The previous owner changed them about 20 hours before I bought it (supposedly). I put on about 50-60 hours. It was about 15 or 16 months. I was able to get it off but now the little metal tip of the plug is still attached to the coil all the way inside the rubber sleeve or shaft.

Ahh, so the tip screws on, I didn't break it. I had never seen that before. So I just unscrew the tip from the new plug and then I should be able to but it back in? I will try that. I have attached pictures of my plug. I guess it looks like it is supposed to.

You guys are great! Thanks for the quick responses!

There are two types of plugs available, one has the SOLID top that isn't removable and the other has the threaded stud on the top, with a removable aluminum collar threaded on.

Yep those are normal. When you install the coil press down firmly and you will hear it kinda snap into place.

Also would not hurt to use a little dielectric grease on the top of the plug (to help prevent corrosion) and some anti-seize on the bottom threads. Both should be easily available at any auto parts store.
