Dirt Bikes, ATV's, And UTV's. Off-road fun.

Hi All,

OK... I grew up in SoCal, and I have played with almost every kind of offroad toy imaginable. I even raced SCORE desert series for a few years on a WR250 in the early to mid 90's. Now I'm stuck in PA, and there isn't as much open land, but I still have the itch to go ride.

As some of you know, I have a 4 year old girl, and she wants to come out and ride too... so I'm thinking of getting a Polaris RZR. I have also thought of a larger 4x4 quad, with a rear seat, but I am a little worried about her safety on the back.

So... Who has one, and what feed back can you give me???

Hey Doc... the Rhino's are cool as well as most side by sides... as w/ anything there are risk factors w/ regards to maiming/loosing limbs etc. w/ roll overs, but hey, just be carefull. Gotta be woods & thickets etc. to ride in out there... Good luck... MH

I have a lot of friends and customers that have blinged out Rhino's, RZR's and Teryxs....they all have their plus and minuses...the Rzr is the "funnest" out of the box one, but is kind of small in the 2 seat version. This year they releases a Rzr 4, 4 seater stock, decent cage, etc. It's easy for guys to drop a ton of cash into these things blinging them out and then getting over their heads and needing to sell for pennies on the dollar (at least the aftermarket stuff).....one thing to consider is whether you want a carb or EFI....in the last couple of years they have switched to EFI and while it might be better for most, it takes the ability to get any good performance gains away...most guys add an aftermarket CDI as one of their first mods...works great on the carb'd models, limited results with EFI........

As an avid off roader as well, I've thought about getting one, but the $ to fun factor just isn't there for me....you can find a Samurai, do a few budget mods and be faster and go more places than most of the SXS's go...

They are cool though, I just have too many other expensive hobbies, lol....

Check out rhinoforums.net, my buddy started that forum (and then sold it for a pretty penny), pretty good info there and you can see what money pits these things can be.....it's mostly west coast oriented, but lots of info and a ton of vendors onboard pimping their goods...

I have been racing profesionally on quads for many years. I have taken my son riding with me from as far back as I can remember. Whenever he was around 4 I always kept him up front of me. Piece of mind having him up front. My arms kept him in place, and he held on to the fuel cap. Doing this though you will want a full faced helmut because him head butting me in the chin with his helmut hurt LOL.

I used to even ride him on this one...he loved it.

Thanks for the input.

I agree that the $$$ : fun factor is hard to justify. (part of my problem) And I agree that an old Sami is an absolute HOOT to drive... but this is for the 50" wide, ATV only trails. The original plan was to pick up $1500 Scrambler (2-stroke, 4wd) but then my little girl has been bugging me to ride too... so I've been looking at the SxS. (to keep her safe)

Because this is going to be used on ATV trails... I think most of the other brands are going to be too wide. That's why I'm looking at the RZR.

The final prob, is that in PA... these things get used on the Farm, and in thick mud. Oh... and people think they are made out of gold. So... they are ether beat to death, and look rotten, because they are left out in the snow, and the harsh weather....or... people what more than they are worth. Right now on the local craigslist, there is a guy trying to sell a 2010 ZRZ 800 LE for $12,500. The new retail is only $11,500.

I guess I need to join a BBS and see what people are saying about them. I'll check out the one you posted.

Thanks

Rampage:

Cool vid. I miss racing, but I'm pushing 40, and my back, knees, and both elbows are shot.

RokNRich:

do you work/own a shop?

This is how we ride now... but that little 50 won't hold us both much longer. :D

Here's my Last WR250 that I set up for Barstow to Vegas. When I moved to PA... the guy that did the inspection was laughing the entire time, and just kept saying... you can't have a 2-stroke on the street.

And the Jeep....

the roll cage in the jeep doubled as a air tank for the ARB air lockers and on board air system. trying to find a pic of the matching trailer. In the background you can see my Sea Ray I had to. Actually in that same pic you can see the trailer in the backgraound LOL

Back to thread topic though ...

Sorry Doc, you got us all excited about your pics of toys!!

In my opinon I would go with a nice quad and a good two up seat behind you. My experience with the sbs's is they are fun, but somewhat slow, I got a buddy with a razor and he's forever behind us. That way when you don't have your daughter or wifey with yah you can keep up with your friends. Saftey wise, if you get a good quality 2up seat with armrests and good grips I think you'd be just as safe as in the razor.

Let us know what you go with and be sure to post pics!

That's OK... it can be a "Post your Toy" thread.

Let us know what you go with and be sure to post pics!

I'm still thinking about it... but if I do get one... I will post it up.

As far as the speed thing... I've got other toys to do that with... and the trails out here are normally muddy, greasy, tight woods trails. So, it's hard to go very fast. Back home... in SoCal... it was WOT in the deserts.

Also... in the case of the RZR... for me to justify the price... it will be a multi use vehicle. It will see plow duty in the winter, and drag the boat, and jetskis in and out of the garage.
