I bought a cheap illuminated 2'' gauge to replace one of my broken tachs on my Speedster. It has three wires red green and black, I was hoping to plug and play with the old wires for the tach. Anyone know if this will work? or what is the best way to install one? The instructions were horrible, and...Im horrible with electronics

Where did you get the tach? I also need to get some for my speedster. The yellow/red is the tach wire. At least it is on my boat. I didn't see a year for your boat. Red will be the hot wire. .12v, and black will be the ground. Green will go to the tach wire in the hood.

Does it have a switch for 4,6,8 cylinders? I have been trying to get info on tachometers. The resales want way too much, imo, for a 20 year old gauge, but I haven't seen any other options. ...yet.

Hook it up and let us know.

I have a 96 speedster, it has a grey wire, and a purple and black wire that are on a plug together. Im assuming grey is the tach line, purple is 12v and black is the ground.

I bought the tach on ebay, its chinese made and was only around $16. I do not know how long it will hold up, as I'm sure it is not marine rated, but i figured I would give it a shot. It looks nice, and fits perfect into the hole where the old tach was. It does have a switch for 4,6, or 8 cylinders, I did not realize that until you asked. Not sure if it will give an accurate reading, or even work on a 2 cyl.
