My DI has been reasonably reliable
I've heard/read a lot of problems about DI models ... unfortunately, after i bought a used one a year ago ... "with 105 hours on it" ... the unit was going ok last summer ... is it a good idea to get rid of it before it starts to breakdown?
what about 4-strokes ... a used 4- stroke GTX would be a good option? will it have the same power
I bought my GTX DI in 2001 and it has around 350 hours on it. I've winterized each season - although the winters are fairly mild in North Texas. It's always been stowed on a JetDock floating dock and exposed to open air temperatures, never been capsized or used for extreme wake jumping and the like, but it has been run a lot a high speed.
Here's the extent of the problems I've had:
A battery replacement about every other season.
A wear ring replacement about 75 hours ago.
A leaking oil tank ("weeps" at the top/bottom tank seam).
That last problem caused me to join this forum looking for guidance on the fix. I've learned that the parts to repair it myself will cost about $80 for the tank and maybe $10 for consumables such as tie-wraps, etc. A shop will do the total repair for about $200. I also heard that the tanks built after 2003 don't have this problem like the older ones do.
Notice that none of these problems had anything to do with the DI engine per se. Also, I didn't join the forum to tell everyone what a great machine it is; but, in reality, I had a great time with it and it has been very reliable -- only the wear ring was a true "down-time" issue. The battery replacements were all at the beginning of the season (really part of the season readiness procedure) and the leaky oil tank hasn't kept me from riding.
Bottom line: I could afford it, but I'm not planning on selling mine and buying a 4-stroke...
My opinion, FWIW, YMMV and all that...
