Its warming up here in Australia and today i took out the boat for a quick spring run.
I was playing around with depth finder and was wondering if anyone actually uses this. I can understand using this when considering to pull up at a beach or anchor but apart from that, is there any other use?
If travelling at any decent speed, there is no way you could pull up in time based on the depth finder.
I'm considering removing the gauge, fitting it behind the dash so that the warning buzzer can still be heard and gauge can still be seen by lifting the console lid and replacing with a VDO boost gauge.
I believe the gauge is 52mm?

Thoughts?

Thanks

I have an 04 speedster so they didn't come with a depth gauge installed. That said I use the one on the combo chart/sounder to alert me if the depth gets less than 1.5m as an alert. I'm out in the bay so rapidly reducing depths is not that much of an issue but it has saved me from grounding on a couple of sand bars that move around the place.

I had a Lowrance HDS 5 and found it fantastic. It seemed to be able to get a reading from the bottom, almost regardless of speed. The thing blew up on me for reasons unknown and I replaced it with a Raymarine Dragonfly 7. I find the dragonfly isn't as good at readying the depth at speed but the features of the Dragonfly out do the Lowrance significantly. If you are looking for a plotter/sounder combo have a look at Arnold's boat shop. It's an online store but I haven't found prices that get near them for that sort of stuff. The reviews are mixed but I have to say I had absolutely no isses with them.
