Question. Did the 96 Speedster have dual batteries and then that changed to a single battery in 97?

Yes, the 96 used two pwc batteries while the 97 used one full sized marine battery.

That explains it. I just bought a 97 Speedster and it came with a 96 service manual. I guess I should get myself the correct manual so I don't run into other issues like this, or worse.
