Dash Console Removal 1998 Sportster 1800

I was attempting to replace the 12V power receptacle last night and discovered the two screws on the front of it are misleading, it seems the entire dash has to come off to replace this, any body taken the panel off this thing can give me some tips?

it seems there are nuts on these screws between the dash and the inside fiberglass behind it so the only way I can figure this works is if the front dash cover comes off first?

Thanks!

Nope. Post a pic.

If it's the colored plastic dash panel... then all the gauges, and switches hold it in place too. BUT... The 12v plug should just pull out, unless it has a big nut on the back. Just lift the bucket out of the front, and look inside.

It's the colored plastic one with all the gauges, but the 12 v has two nuts, one in the back and one in between the back and the plastic which is my issue, so I guess I have to take the nuts off all the instruments to get it off.

Once you get it done and see what the easy way was please let me know as I need to replace mine also.

Well, I got it done tonight, wasn't easy, took about 1 hour total not counting breaks.

Open console and take out storage container, behind, you have to find the nuts for both choke cables loosen them, take off the large plastic nuts from the back side,

unscrew both the engine stop buttons rubber covers on the front, take them completely off

unscrew both nuts and take them and the washers off the back side of the 12V outlet, 7MM, be careful not to drop

unscrew the fuel gauge large white plastic sleeve from the back side then slide out, don't need to disconnect it

Repeat previous step with left tachometer, speedometer, and right tachometer, I didn't need to go any further than that to get the dash pulled out far enough to do what I needed to do.

I was able to pull the dash forward far enough to get the the nuts in between the dash cover and the "firewall"/hull. the 12V outlet bolts, that look like screws from the front, have a spacer, washer, and nut in between here, also a 7MM, put a wrench on the 7mm nut and then with a philiphs screw driver on the bolt on the front, loosen until it comes off, also be careful not to loose nut, spacer, washer.

That's it, seemed like a lot of effort for a $10 12V outlet replacement.

This part of the shop manual is missing, says it wasn't ready at print time and there was a supplement published later but that still didn't cover removing the dash and instruments, only had the wiring diagrams.
