Is it possbible for the Crank Position Sensor to work perfectly find below 5000 RPM and not above 5000 RPM? I took my 2001 Utopia w/ the Mercury 200 hp Optimax, in after taking it out on the water for the first time and the engine kept dying over 5000 RPM. He called today to say that the sensor needed to be replaced. Has anyone had a CPS go out? If so, what were the symptoms?

Please let us know if this works so we can share it with others like you and save them money. please pm me if it works and I miss your post. thank you Robin

Cps?

The crankshaft position sensor performs the same function as your distributer on your car; sends the signal to the ignition system to tell it the position of your pistons and which one is ready for its spark.
That said, in my opinion, if it works while accelerating to 5k rpm, then shuts down, it can't be that sensor causing it.
In short, that sensor is your engines timing .......

every cps i have ever seen go bad creates a no-start situation. i think you have a mechanic who is guessing with YOUR MONEY!

Hello everyone,

It turns out it was the Crank Position Sensor.:hurray::hurray: Took the boat out for the weekend and would go up to 5650 RPM. It turns out that the sensor would lose track of the flywheel and the computer shut it down.

I'll remember that....

Well, I'll remember that. When I read about the CPS, it seemed to me that it wouldn't let the engine run like it did. Anyway, glad your back on the water! :hurray:
