Cracked Water Jacket

I am looking at buying a 1997 Seadoo Challenger 1800 and the seller is telling me that the starboard engine has a cracked water jacket.

What is the water jacket, where can I find an exploded diagram of where it is located, and about how much should I expect to spend on repairing it?

Also, what causes a cracked water jacket and can there be other damage to the engine b/c of bad maintenance?

they could be talking about a number of things, the cylinders(buckets), the heads, the exhaust system, ect...


they all have water jackets...

go to "SBT on the web" to look for parts and costs before you buy....

You need to ask more questions and find out exactly what is wrong with it.

It seems to be a common thing with seadoo. Like it was said above… there are water jackets all over the engine… but there are normally only 2 places they will crack.

1) The cylinders will crack if they are not winterized. The leftover water can freeze, and split the outer cylinder wall.
2) The plugs in the exhaust pipe crack loose from normal use.

Either of the problems is a pain… but are easy to fix, if you take the part off, and have them welded by a shop that can weld aluminum. If you do your own labor to remove, and clean the part… the weld shop should only charge you $20 to $40 to fix it.

BUT… before you buy it… make sure it is only a crack in the water jacket… and not something more. (make sure you hear the engine run)

So I am the one who bought the boat in question and the cracked water jacket is on one of the cylinders. It is about a 1" crack on the exterior of the cylinder.

My question is can I get by in the short term by using an epoxy on it to seal it? I don't know how much pressure runs through the cylinders, but my plan was to take the dremel and grind the paint down to get a better grip. Then when it is time to rebuild the motors (hopefully not soon) I will have someone weld the crack.

If the epoxy is a "ok" solution what type should I use?

If I was you ill contact sbt and get a rebuild top end. They will charge you a little more than usual because they have to weld yours but i think is worth it.

I took a look at the top end kit from sbt and I wanted to know what other people have paid for just the gaskets, pistons and rings? I can get 2 cylinders for $150 a piece. a top end kit from sbt is $309 and the kit from sbt with the cylinder exchange is $475.
