Crack in a grey area just behind the intake grate

HELLO EVERYONE,
I just bought a 95 speedster that runs great but I have a couple concerns. 1. the fuel gauge doesnt work and 2. just behind the intake grate on the bottom of the boat there is a grey colored area that is cracked. Whats is this area and is it something that I should be concerned about?

I'm a newbie to the jet boat community and will need all the help I can get.

1) The float sank. It's a common problem on the older skis. Replace it with the new style float.

2) Post a pic. To me... "Behind the intake grate" is just boat hull.
