Cover Waterproofing

I have some covers that are probably as old as the skis but they are in good shape. I would like to put some sealer or waterproofing agent on them to keep the water out.

I was thinking a tent waterproofer but most tents are made of a nylon type material and the covers are more of a canvas kind of material.

Is there any product that works better then others?

I've used Aerospace products. 303 for vinyl, fiberglass, plastic, rubber etc.....NOT FOR CANVAS

I think another number can be for canvas....not sure look it up

Site on the bottle is www.303products.com

I cleaned my old canvas covers with IOSSO Tent and Camping Gear Cleaner. It worked very well, removed 90% of the mildew stains. I then waterproofed them with Canvak Canvas Preservative, worked great. Plan to apply it outdoors, fumes are very strong.

We use big canvas tents at work and we spray Thompsons Waterseal on them when they start leaking. Just go to lowes and get that and a big pump up sprayer and you're covered.

what is you experience with how long it lasts?
I would think that something made specifically for canvas would work better (but maybe not).
I've also used the silicon sprays in the past, they seem to work good at first but again don't last very long.

The next question would be if you dare apply it while it was on the boat?

And if not, could you apply it evenly enough while it was on the driveway?

I'd say about a year. With them being put up and down daily in the dirt and grass it works pretty good(when it rains they dont leak through and beads up pretty good), that's not to say it works better than anything else, but it's what the manufacturer recommends.

Thanks for all the input guys. I found a 1 gal can of Thomson's in the barn, so I think I will give that a try first.
I going to use a 4" paint brush to apply it. Any pooling that might happen I will just wipe up excess with a rag.

That should work, but we just use the sprayers that you use for spraying weed killer.

my ski covers I spread out on the picnic table and did one half at a time then flipped it over. I would not use the stuff I used while it was on the boat/ski

I use 303 Fabric Guard and ordered it on Amazon. A friend has a custom cover and it was the recommended product by Sunbrella and it worked really well with my ancient cover. I got 2 years of waterproofing from a single application and it is still holding up. I just received another bottle and will be reapplying this spring. Its not cheap, but it seems to work really well. I just got a 32 oz spray bottle.

I also used it on a jacket and was able to hold it under a faucet for a long period of time with no water intrusion. It is also recommended on auto upholstery.
