Hi, I brand new to the site, and just got my first Seadoo the other day. I was wondering the seller said the boat only had about 40 hours (hard to believe) and never had any major repair. But the first red flag was one engine (the body underneath the cover is silver and the other is white, is this common or do you think it was changed. 2nd there are ports on both sides for the blige fan but only the starboard side has an actual fan? Is that incorrect, and third the starboard motor when started for 5-10 seconds on trailer shoots right up to 3.5 k and the port does it gradually, also I took the handle assembly with the throttle knobs out and it seems the cable is loose. When I adjusted it the motor ran at 2k and the port at 3-3.5 what is normal rpms? The fuel gauge dosn't work, and the seller send sometimes it does that and he would tap the fuel tank and it would start working, and last but not least there is oil all over the port engine from I guess the holding tank? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Red flags!....

It sounds like you are already a bit Seadoo Savvy......
Yes, the bottoms, one silver and one white, is a dead give away that the silver one has been pulled and reworked or changed out. I would hope it was a complete change out because the casing covers are specific to each engine. One bottom casing will not fit to another. They are machined together as one piece.

The engine vent (bilge fan) is on the starboard and is set up to exhaust. The hole on the port side is the intake. It's for the fan to draw air across the engine compartment to keep explosive gases from building in case of a fuel leak.

On the trailer, the rpm is set to about 3k rpm. On the water, you should idle at 1500 rpm. As for one engine faster than the other, that could be a matter of simple adjustments to syncronize the 2 engines together.

You mention your throttle cable. You have a split cable that goes to your steering. This is suppose to be loose. It's called your docking assist. When you turn your wheel at idle, your nozzle is making a casual turn. But as you turn tighter, the steering will come to bottom out, then the throttle is pulled, goosing the engine rpm up to assist in the turn. That's normal.

The biggest red flag is the oil all over the port engine. I'd be looking for the "root cause" as to where this oil came from. The most likely is the inlet or vent line out of the rotary chamber of the engine. This line is about 1/2 in diameter and leaves the bottom of the oil tank, goes into the rotary from the port side of the engine and comes out under the carbs of the starboard side. That line goes back to the top of the oil tank, you'll notice the oil in that line is equal to the oil level in the tank.

Take a mirror and flashlight and see if you can look up under that engine for any oil leaks from those hoses.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for your support, if it weren't for members like you, we wouldn't be here.

Thanks for the response, I will check in the am, and try to get some pics of the engine bay, One other thing I forgot, the starboard engine, I noticed during the 5-10 sec duration that is on (while on the trailer) makes a rattling noise? Opposed to the port side it’s less noticeable, is that normal? Unfortuanlly, I can't test it on the water yet, because I just took the boaters test today, and I'm waiting for my boaters licence to come in the mail, so I just wanted to get it in top shape.

Ahh yes, the Seadoo rattle...

Yes, the noise is from the shaft if normal. All Seaoo's do it. They sell an aftermarket product for making it a bit quieter, but it doesn't work for long, before it's right back to where is was.

It's nothing to worry about, mine (97 Challenger) does it and many others in the forum.....

I took the rear cover off and snapped some pics, what do you think thanks

Oil spills...

It does look like they have/had a leak at the oil tank. Maybe the seam. But it seems to be around the vent. May have also been over filled.

You would do yourself a favor in a compression test. The RAVE valves looked really clean, like they were bought recently. They are set at the old setting. Seadoo had a supplemental that changed that setting, so if the boat was maintained, it wasn't by an OEM mechanic.

I would have loved to see a pix taken from under that black box (air box) on the right side, of the lower part of the motor. But for the most part, the engine doesn't look, from the views I got, that there were any real problems. The "new looking" RAVE valves, I'd question. You'll notice how dirty the engine is but the red caps of the RAVE valves seem bright and shiny.

Do the compression test to see how well the engines are holding up. Clean them up with some kind of degreasing agent, like Dawn dishwashing liquid mix in a bucket. You can get most everything wet, if everything is still sealed, which from the perspective I have, looks so. This way, when you run it, if the oil splatters come back, then you know you need to start looking for the problem. But it does look like oil blowing from the vent line.

I bought a comp tester today, but I'm a little confused as to where you put the plug wires to ground them so that I can run the test, do you know the best method, or is there directions for comp testing, thanks.

Ground lugs....

From the pictures, it appears that your grounding lugs are missing. There are two places they are normally put. Either on the front, to the magneto casing, or at the intake bridged to the exhaust.

They are orangish in coloer, with an aluminum tip.....if you don't have them, lay at least one plug down on top of metal of the engine, it will ground and discharge to the block of the engine. This serves the same principle as the grounding lugs.

Compression Test

Okay the results are in:

Port Side
Forward 135-140
Rearward 135-140

Starboard side
Forward 130-135
Rearward 130-135

I did it 3 times on each cylinder and got those ranges

I've read that 150 is factory, does this mean the engines will not preform well. Thanks
