First off

I am now getting an odd stutter when taking off from stopped in the water. It is definitely a miss fire. Doesn't seem to do it often. Boat still runs strong as in 62 mph and 8100 ram. Seems to happen after you shut it down for a min and then go. Or if you are running at a constant speed for a long time then push the throttles forward. (Less often this way)

I am leaning towards a coil. Pulled the plugs and they are perfect as I replaced them at the start of the season.

Second item

I have oil in my intake. First noticed it on the supercharger outlet, but then went further and it seems to be coming from the breather line. Not a huge amount but there nevertheless.

I suspect it is normal? I did notice that I had to add 1/2 quart this season but that was to bring the full back towards the top line. That would have been in 40 hours of running, so not a big deal. Is suspect though that lost oil is going through from the breather.

Cheers,

Well, the supercharger went south today. Went full tilt for a bit then got a squeeze of some sort. Total loud bearing noise in engine compartment.

Towed it back to avoid running it.

Pulled the SC, now has a fair amount of lateral play in it. Luckily not enough for it to let the wheel contact the housing but needs to be rebuilt. The plastic parts of the ball bearings look to be separated but they all seem to be still in there.

Everything else looks perfect on it including the wheel.

I guess I will eat my words when it comes to the time limit in rebuilding. Strange though because I had it out 20 hours ago and it was 100%. Like others have mentioned the the plastic gets brittle because that is what has happened to mine.

Going to rebuild it, just hope no pieces of plastic escaped.

Hate to hear that. I think the "100 hours or 2 years" is a valid interval. You cant really tell by just looking at it.

Darn! How many hours on this supercharger? Is it the Original? Good luck and please let us know how the rebuild goes.

Was the original. Boat was is a 2011 sold new in 2012. I bought it this year with 55 Hours on it and it now has 88 hours. I had a intercooler failure at 65 hours and pulled the SC then and it tested perfect. (No play, free spin with no roughness, clutch slip at basically 11NM) I put it back in and figured I would check it again at 100 hours.

The boat started a few weeks ago, stuttering when accelerating from a stop from time to time. It basically happens only after it has been shut down and restarted and once done, runs no problem. I figured (and still do) that it is a coil or plug because again, it only happens after you start from a shutdown. It also runs perfect to 8060 RPM.

2 Weekends ago, when it stuttered, it also made basically a squeal. It ran normal after that but when I returned to the dock I felt it sounded louder with more of a rotating gear sound. I pulled both sides of the hoses off the SC and noticed some oil but to be honest, there is always a bit of oil in the intake from the PCV return. (Something I have researched is normal). I did notice that the SC had more gear lash that I thought was there before. (Again another sign I chose to ignore)

This weekend, when I started it at the dock, I was sure it sounded louder but chose to see how it performed. No issues, so headed out.

Was out with friends with PWC's and they run pretty hard. Was flat out for about 30 seconds keeping up with them when I heard another squeal. I immediately shut it down. I was now convinced I had a problem. We towed it back, and I put it in the garage and started pulling it apart.

The excessive gear lash was cause by the gear side bearing race failure. Basically the bearing has a backside race with plastic fingers in it. The fingers keep the bearings in order. All of my fingers were broken and free floating, now allowing the bearings to be floating as well. Luckily the inside bearing is intact which prevented touchdown of the impeller. (Big win there)

I am a certified Gear Head who also is way to OCD. Sometimes, I let others convince me that they don't hear it, but I do.

Rule #1. If the sound changes in your boat, immediately bench it and find out why. I lucked out because if it was the inside bearing, I would have had "Touchdown" with the impeller touching the housing and a lot more problems. Also, I felt the lash was different so I should have pulled it then.

Getting the SC rebuild now.

My only OCD worry is that did any of the broken plastic come out of the bearing and is now in my PTO housing? I counted the fingers and they are all there, but they are no longer attached to the back of the race. I pulled the oil filter and nothing there.

Thanks for the informative reply. This summer, we bought our 2012 180 challenger SE 255hp with 27H on it, now 44H. Original supercharger. After your experience, I'm gonna have the supper charger rebuilt in the off season.

Did you remove it yourself and take it to a re-builder? is this something you would try yourself given the time?

I did remove it and dropped it off at the dealer this morning. I thought of buying the tools but to be honest, it is worth it for me to have someone do it who does it all the time. They hope to give it back to me by the end of the week, which will be good because the days are numbered for boating for me here in Canada.

BTW, removing it is not difficult.

You need E8 an E8 torx box wrench and sockets.

There are some videos but I have it down to a science now.

I should really do a video considering I have done it now twice this year.

I am on the East Coast (NB).

Yes, still some life left in the boating season although there is a frost warning tonight.
