Here in the last couple weeks, there's been a lot of talk about the SAE 30# oil (1 ounce) that is put in the counter balance shaft assembly.
I have taken a couple pictures of my 787 engine that's all torn apart as Robin has suggested, so that all may get a better look. In the pictures, you'll notice on this model, the plug is a sealed type plug and cannot be removed for maintenance. Like others who have stated this, I too have no idea at what year Rotax made this oil chamber accessible by installing a removable plug.
The oil is used to lubricate the two drive gears, one on the crank and one on the balance shaft. They area (void) in which this oil is stored is very small. This oil lubricates these gears by being spashed onto them as the engine runs. The seal on the balance shaft keeps the oil from moving down the shaft toward the forward most bearing on the balance shaft and the crankshaft seals keep the oil from going into the crankshaft.
I hope I've put enough information on the pictures for all to understand. If you think that you need to see something from a different angle, send me a PM, I'll be glad to take a pix for you.................
