Corrosion on reverse bracket before and after

So I was sick of looking at the corrosion on the reverse bucket brackets on our boat. Being that the day started off crappy, we decided to remove them and clean them up. Well.............not so fast said Mr. Corroded bolts. 1 bolt on each bracket wouldn't budge. Soaked them in some Kroil. Still nothing. Had to break out some special tools. Each bolt took about 30 minutes to remove.

We were just talking about anti-seize in another thread and it holds true here. Had the previous owner used some anti-seize, I wouldn't have had the issues I had today. I'll have to get some new hardware later this week before I put everything back together. I wound up using a special wheel on my die grinder to remove the corrosion and just repainted them with some Rustoleum.

If they survive, great, if not, I'll have them bead blasted and powder coated this winter. I wound up pulling the pump cones to check everything out. All seems good to me. Holler if you see something suspect. The brackets are currently drying out back. I'll post pics in a few when they're done.

I also noticed a little sealer between venturi and pump housing. I thought this was unnecessary?

Paint is still drying, but you get the point.

Now I just need to pick up some new hardware and chase some threads.

May be the lighting, but Pump Cone 2 looks a little "milky" to me, like there may have been a little water intrusion. I'm not an expert, mind you, just paranoid about that.

Better safe than sorry. You have the brackets off. Pull the pump and get the Sea Doo Rebuild kit.

I don't really see any reason to rebuild the pumps. I found zero traces of water in either. Bearings look good, no pitting or anything. I also don't have the tools to press the bearings and seals into place. I'd more than likely have to pay a shop to do the rebuild. I think it may have been the lighting with the grease, but they both appeared the same when I removed them. This coming winter I plan on removing the pumps and inspecting the wear rings and impellers. Might replace the rings if needed and have the impellers redone as well.

Couple of questions: Do I have to use the Sea Doo grease for the cones or is there an alternative that people here use? Same with the wear rings, do I need to go OEM or are there acceptable alternatives?

Cleaned up the remaining 6 bolts. Hitting Ace in a bit to see if they have anything I can use to replace the 2 that got messed up. Here's a pic of the before and after of the bolts.

They look good cleaned up. I use anti-Seize on the shank and blue loctite on the threads.

I've always used Seadoo grease. What I learned the hard way, though, is that you don't want to "pack" the cone with grease. It can damage your seals when the grease heats up. There is a prescribed amount to put in the cone. I used a fried turkey injector syringe to measure it out and put it on the bearings and in the cone.

If you don't have the manual, I can look up the amount for you later.

Thanks. I do have the manual. It says 23mL or 0.8oz of pump grease. believe I will leave everything as is for this season and they go to town over the winter making sure everything is new and good to go. Boat has about 130 hours on her now. It was serviced prior to us purchasing the boat. Not positive on what all was done, but things don't look outta wack.

I was thinking of going with some marine grease in the bracket housings and then a bit of blue loctite on the bolt thread tips with some anti seize near the upper threads. There was a bunch of corrosion inside the mount holes (considering they're several inches long). Those have been cleaned up and seem good to go. I'll run a wooden dowel down them with the grease to ensure they make it through the season.

Still have to chase the threads in the pump housing. I've soaked them in some Kroil since yesterday. They should be good to go, that stuff is amazing. I wasn't planning on any sealer between the venturi and the pump. I've never seen any used on my buddies' skis or jet boats. Any reason why I should?

Appreciate the help and suggestions.

Also purchased 2 new zincs as the ones on the brackets seemed pretty far gone. Could be why the housings were so corroded.

i dont use loctite, just marine grease on the bolts and threads. never had a seized bolt!! gasket seal, stops any water leakage, cavitation. my pump is old and has some dings and grooves that need to be sealed. also helps putting back on the pump.

May be the lighting, but Pump Cone 2 looks a little "milky" to me, like there may have been a little water intrusion. I'm not an expert, mind you, just paranoid about that.

Ya know, this really had me thinking about it. I removed the cones again and they are 2 different colors of grease. Showed them to some other boating friends and they suspected 1 of 2 things, either some sort of contamination or PO used a different type of grease.

So I ordered a tube of grease from the dealer and I'm going to clean the old grease out as best I can and repack the cones with the proper amount of grease. I'll check them out mid summer and see what's going on. If they look suspect, I'll have to rebuild everything.

Now I'm going to be paranoid about it.

dont worry too much, you are doing a good job! and now you know more about your boat and pump. now you are aware of possible water intrusion you can manage and check end of season.
just repack with marine grease, check seals and bearing and go....enjoy!

nice work on the bracket

Reverse brackets re-installed. I think they came out great. Got new zincs for each. The only thing bothering me now is the vertical play in the reverse cable where the cotter pin holds it in place. I'm hoping it has less play once the buckets are installed tomorrow.

Those bolts are a pain to remove. Mine was so bad they broke off and I had to get a new bracket. On the re-install I used anti seize and grease. Mine had lots of play too, guess its normal. Never had a issue with it so I left it alone.
