Can anyone tell me how to remove the clutch/flywheel from a 95 seadoo gtx bombardier? Is it pressed on or screwed on to the crank shaft? Also do you have to pull the motor to change the flywheel? The new flywheel is smooth where it goes on the shaft and then has fine threads about a inch deeper.

thanks

Mag and flywheel?

I'm pretty sure your asking about the magneto and flywheel assembly.

There are two component parts to the ends of the crankshaft. The PTO hub and the flywheel with the magneto armature plate. The PTO is threaded and the mag and flywheel are bolted on by a nut. When you remove the nut, you'll need to remove the flywheel with a gear puller, like a harmonic type puller. You most likely will not get this off without removing the engine.

Behind the flywheel, you'll find the armature plate. You should not have to remove it to get the flywheel off but for some reason, if you do, make sure you mark it's position. That's your timing.............

Thanks for the info. I should have made it more clear but I am talking about the PTO end of the crankshaft. The drive shaft striped at the rear of the crank and Im trying to get the peice off that connects it to the crank. I thought it was called the flywheel. If it screws off, how do you hold the crank while backing off the flywheel?

Thanks

The PTO turns off in a counter direction. I use a piece of cotton line down the spark plug hole, bring the piston to TDC then using a large wrench, a pipe wrench works well being carfull not to chew up the pto.Hit the end of the long handle and it should break free the pto. It works better if you doing it on the garage floor.

Shop rag....

I usually find the best way to remove the PTO hub is by removing the exhaust manfold and stuffing a shop rag inside the cylinder, then turn the piston up till it bottoms out. The shop rag (or by Karls cotton line) will keep the piston from continuing it's travel, effectively holding the crank still while you break the PTO.

And like PWCjunkie says............"watch the heat"

You said the PTO hub was stripped. It sounds like your saying it's stripped at the threads. If so, you are not going to be able to fix that inside the ski. You might be looking at a crank replacement.

Are you sure the splines did not strip out on you? If there is a lack on yearly maintenance to the PTO grease fitting, eventually, over time, it may heat up, burn off the grease, then get brittle and start to chew up the splines till you strip it.

if you are replacing the drive shaft, and the old one still has one end with good splines on it,
use a torch and heat it up and bend one end about 4 inches from end
make it look like a L
use this like a tool to remove the PTO or impeller
good luck

Thanks for all the help.I was lucky and was able to get it off without using any heat. It was pretty easy after I put a small cotton rope in the cylinder. Used a pipewrench and a three foot pipe and it poped loose.

Thanks again!

I have been doing that method for years...you just have to be careful with the pipe wrench slipping and chewing things up. Glad it worked for you.

Impeller removal tool?

Hi Guys,

Sorry to dig up an old subject, but I was thinking of using my impeller removal tool to remove my pto flywheel on my 97 gsx as the splines appear to be the same on each end, would you guys see any issues with that?

Here is the tool I am referring to if you wonder... http://www.shopsbt.com/jetski_repair_tools/80-101-10.html
