Cleaning Aluminum Residue From Crankcase

I have the top end off of my 1994 GTX. The front cylinder, that had the hole burned in the top, has some aluminum residue down in the crank area. What is the best way to clean that out? Wipe down, flush it, blow it out, some combination?

Thanks,
Brett

The best way... your not going to like it. You should pull the engine out and pull the bottom end apart to make sure you do not have anything in there that could ruin the seals or worse yet get in the bearings.

Sorry to brake the bad new to you.

I not really looking to cut corners and I agree that taking it apart would be the best way but if it can be avoided with good justification, than I would like to do that.

What do most people do?
My goal is to get this going for some general riding around the lake. I baby all of my toys (boat, 2 ATVs, snowmobile, MG Midget) and use them very infrequently. Probably too infrequently for optimum health of the units actually.

The only PWC that I ever rode was a '82 Jet Ski 440 that was fun when it ran but almost never ran. I suspect that I will like the GTX but if not, I don't want to loose money on the deal either.

Anyway, thanks for all of your input, this site is great.

On my snowmobiles in the past if I melted a piston. I would pull the crank and clean the whole assembly with muriatic acid. All that aluminum had to go somewhere and if it ends up in the bearings their toast. The acid will eat the aluminum away so don't get it on the case.

i have blown 3 RV drive gears with the same 580 motor. i didn't get 2 minutes running time out of it. crank stirs the stuff up. it flies around. goes into intake hole. rotary valve comes around like a guillotine. only the neck wins the argument and the guillotine dies. get everything out of the case.

The Engine Is Out. Can I Flush Out The Residue?

OK, I got the engine almost out (still need to disconnect the wire going into the top of the Mag).

Can I flush the engine with fuel or kerosene to get out metal residue? How about spraying it out with WD-40?

Or is splitting the case the only way to do an acceptable job?

Thanks again,

Brett

the wires to magneto. it is kinda half-ass, but i cut them. then i buy a 12 inch trailer wire extension and i have 2 matching plugs that are made to stand up to moisture. split the cases. carb or brake cleaner. then re-spray the bearings with spray white lith grease or pour STP or assembly lube into them so they aren't dry until engine can lube them with 2-stroke oil. thin film Permatex #2 on the case mating halves. real thin.
