Water in the Jet pump! Great!

Hey everyone,

So I decided to change my jet pump oil tonight. Everything went great and i got to the cone that houses the jet pump oil and noticed that on the set screw i found oil around the opening that the jet pump oil is loaded into. So i took the cone off and found a bunch of water in it along with a little bit of oil. (probably 75% water). Now i have no idea when it was last changed due to just buying it last season but the seal around the cone seemed to be in good condition ( no cracks, not dried out etc. ) however i did notice that one of the seals around the bailer passages was totally gone but i don't believe that this would cause water to get into the jet pump. could it? Let me know what you guys think?

Looks like you may have some bad seals.
The plug could leak also and let water in if no thread sealant was used (and the reason for oil to be around the plug).
You need to do a pressure test to see where your leak is.
Don't mess around with it!
Pump aren't cheap to replace!

The is a really good section in your manual labeled PUMP PRESSURIZATION in the PROPULSION SYSTEM section.
It will tell you everything you need to know.

Sounds good guys. The hard part is i don't know when it was last changed so its hard to say how many hours its been running like that. Regardless, i will definitely check into getting those seals. I don't have a pressure tester, so i might have to go and get one. Thanks for the help!

I "think" they all do. It is a simple task. You will have to remove some things off the back and there will be a cone. Mine has 3 bolts holding it on. Don't know about yours. REmove the bolts and let it drain. Then you will have to seal it back up. Check the o-ring. I used the synthetic stuff from the dealer. You will then need to pressure test it. If it leaks then you are up a creek. If the oil is milky, then you have water in it. May have caused bearing problems.

Pressure Tester

Anyone know if i can just pickup a generic pressure tester or do i need to get one special from a marine store? I plan on getting one later today to get this figured out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hey jono...think it nodifferent than "JPX" sticky for carb pop-off tester. Need gauge/meter, that will not allow air to flo back, but yet, keep it pressured...Home Depot run for fittings, and bicycle pump should work
