97 challenger- Can`t make it to seadoo dealer this week,is there any other gear oil for jet pumps that won`t damage the bearings. Some have posted mobil one gear oil or quicksilver hp gear oil. I`m just asking if these lubes are still holding up. Thanks

Yep... you can use any synth GL5 75w90 oil. (gear oil) I buy a quart at the autoparts store for less than that little 6 oz bottle that the dealer sells.

I use Mobil LS1, 75w90, GL-5 full synthetic, Auto Zone or Advance has it about $ 10.00 qt.

There is a small plug that comes out. It is pipe thread and needs to be sealed when you put it back on. For draining, you can just take out the 3 small 8mm bolts and then tap the cone a little to pop it off.

its only 3 ounces per side do you think 12 bucks for the seadoo oil it to much to spend give me a break

Its how close you are to the nearest dealer, I`ve mail ordered with an oil soaked packing in package arriving. So an alternative works for me.

These things are expensive enough to run and maintain. You need to save money where ever you can. Besides I think the Mobile is a better product than the SeaDoo gear oil. And it doesn't smell near as bad.

Like craigy says, we do have a local dealer, but he doesn't carry jack, I would have to order it also.

Thanks for the Mobil 1 alternative.
I use the Red Line 75W90 gear oil, since I was told by a Seadoo dealership mechanic friend that Red Line is the supplier for Bombardier. Apparently all Bombardier/Seadoo does is add a die to change the color. The Red Line gear oil is also rated better (API GL-5, GL-6, MT-1, MIL-L-2105E, SAE J2360). It only costs a couple of bucks more per quart than Mobil.

I have a question.
When you change your pump oil, is it dark and smelly?
Or, is this an indication of anything?
When I change the oil seasonally, at well under the 100 hour recommendation, it is usually pretty black and smells bad.
BTW - it was dark and smelly even when I used to buy Seadoo oil.

That's the stock SeaDoo oil, it's almost black and smells real bad. I always change the pump oil when I winterize.

I change mine yearly when i winterize too and it always smells like crap. Thats the nature of gear oil. Change it in any vehicle and it smells worse.

OK, I was just concerned that the black and smell meant something bad was going on.
It seems when I have either checked or changed automotive differentials, that they were not black or smelly.
Do you mean, the oil always smells worse than when it was fresh, or that other vehicles make the oil smell even worse than Seadoos?

Does it literally smell like crap? Cuz thats what happens to gear oil as it gets used. When i was a teenager i worked at jiffy lube for 5 years and about 75% of the cars that i changed gear oil on always smelled like crap. Bad enough that if you get it on your hands it smells for a day or 2. With my boat, it stink but not nearly as bad as what i have smelled in cars. The big thing to be alarmed about is water and metal shavings. Both would be obvious. Just black and smelly is normal.

good to know.

Does it literally smell like crap?...
naw...more like some burnt organic matter. Really weird.

I'm talkin' about the BRP little bottles of oil.

How does mine look? Hardly 10hrs on it, but a winter season. It should be fine, new cones last season., o rings (what I think are the o rings) are plump and round.

Looks normal to me. You are suppose to use a new o ring every time you take the cone off. Since yours ws new last year, i would just clean it up good and reuse it. Put a light layer of sealant around it. Also some sealant on the cone fill plug. You also need to put blue loctite on the cone bolts.
