Hi there,

I just finished installing a rebuilt engine into my 96 Challenger. I redid the carbs while I was at. The boat runs great at idle and runs great until I push the throttle past 6500, then it quits suddenly, like someone through a switch. I ran it for an hour below 6500, runs great, just no good past about 6500 RPM.

Any suggestions on what it could be?

I think it's shutting down at 6500.

Advice from another thread: clean dess post and key
Clip plug wires.
Check grounds.
Pray it isn't the mpem.

I'm having the same problem. My sportster with the 951 carb will run fine but for no apparent reason it cuts out. It's like I pulled the key off the post. Motor cuts and dies. I put the drive in neutral and push start and it starts instantly with no effort and idles fine.

I've read other posts and it sounds like the electrical is cutting out. Anyone have step by step instructions on how to check the wiring with a multi meter?

I clipped the spark plug wires, cleaned the battery posts and connectors, and cleaned the connectors for the ground on the starter under the engine.

Then I figured why not clean the posts on the starter solenoid. Bummer. When tightening the bold on the starter solenoid it must have been week cause it now spins when you turn the bolt so I can't tighten or loosed the cable. Oh well. Ordered a new starter solenoid off fleabay for 17 bux.

Once I get it in, will test and see if the engine still randomly cuts out at high RPM.

The post coming out of the relay spins or the one holding into the backing plate?

Its the post coming out of the relay, its the threaded piece sticking up and the locking nut goes on it to hold the battery wire in place. Didn't even torque the nut that had but it broke loose.
