CHALLENGER 1800 WONT GO ABOVE 10 15 MPH TOPS OUT AT 3500RPM

HELLO I JUST GOT THIS BOAT ITS A 2000 CHALLENGER 1800 WITH THE MERCURY V6 2STROKE IN IT AND TOOK IT OUT AND IT RUNS GREAT EXCEPT WHEN YOU TRY TO ACCELERATE IT JUST TOPS OUT AND STAYS AT 3500RPM MAYBE 10 15MPH IT DID HAVE REALLY OLD GAS IN IT BUT WHAT ELSE WOULD CAUSE THIS ??

Possibly the stator or one of the coil packs; cdi provides testing measurements on the stator assemblies...if it’s right on 3500 and not fluctuating, more likely electronic/electrical, if it’s bouncing around that level; could be something as simple as the inline fuel filter(NAPA) 10 bux..
