Challenger 1800 210 hp m2 rebuild question

I was out the other day and the engine quit running. It would start but ran really hard so I had it towed back in. Did a compression check and I've got zero compression on the port side middle cylinder.

I'm guessing it is time for a rebuild, and my question is how difficult is it to find parts?

I have had a few places quote me between four and $5000 for a rebuild. I am comfortable doing it myself as long as it is accomplishable.

I talked to a guy at a marina today, and he told me that I could probably do it myself if I wanted to invest $2000 and special tools needed. Is he blowing smoke?
I know that most service manuals have special tools in them, but I have never once had to purchase them because there is always a way around it.

Sorry... I'm away on a Biz trip, and havn't been cheking in the last couple days.


There are a few tools... but nothing too crazy. Really the only thing you need is a lifting eye, and a flywheel puller. If you look on ebay... someone sells a combo tool for $35. Other than that... it's just normal hand tools that you would need for an engine. (sockets, wrenches, and torque wrench)

Before committing to anything... get the engine out, and strip it down. Depending on what happened... you may be able to hust hone the bad cyl... and replace the piston.

But then again... you may find a blown rod, crushed cyl liner, and a pitted crank. Regardless... you can still do the rebuild yourself... you just may need to send the block out to be bore'd, and the crank to be welded and ground.


My engine had a HUGE hole in the side of it... and I was able to get her back up and running for under $2000. (installed a cyl sleeve in my kitchen)

Thanks for the info! I am pretty sure I threw a rod. I could hear a clunking noise. If it didn't blow a hole through the block, do you think the crank could still be in good shape and I just need to bore out that cylinder?

Yep... I get that a lot from the muffin pic. But honestly... I told the wife when she was done... turn it up to 450 for me.

If you hear clunking... it could be ugly... but you won't know until you look. But, chances are... the crank will be beat-up on that journal. AND... there will be some internal damage (other than a melted piston) that will need to be addressed.
