My challenger has an issue that if ran for a while, it will not start right back up when turned off. It acts as the battery died and tries to turn over, but doesn’t. I will let it sit for about 10mins and it fires right up??

Someone told me it is the coil getting hot and it needs to cool down.

Does this sound right? If that is the case, what coil would I need to replace?

Thanks in advance.

The coils for your engine are mounted on each spark plug. If you had a failed coil, you would have a poorly running engine as it would only affect that cyl.

You need to be able to troubleshoot the boat when it is in this state. Many times it points to a bad ECU as this is what is responsible for controlling all the components that allow the engine to run.

Some questions:

1.. When in this state, does the engine respond to the start button and turn over?
2.. I assume if it does turn over, does it turn over quickly and normally?
3.. Is there any sign of combustion when you turn it over? (Does it kick or try to start or just endlessly turn over)
4.. I assume when a period passes it will start?

If it turns over from the start button but does not run, it is either fuel or spark.

I would start with fuel.

When you put the key on the post in this state, do you hear the fuel pump prime?

1. the engine attempt to turn over, but doesn’t. Sounds as if the battery is dying (but it’s not the battery)
2. When it turns over it takes maybe 1 or 2 turns and fires right up (it starts the same way as if it was the first time for the day)
3. It just turns and turns. Might get a slight kick, but not enough
4. Yes, after a period of time. It starts right up

Fuel has always been non ethanol and I don’t recall if the pump primes or not

Ok, if it doesn't turn over then I would look at the Solenoid and Starter.

When in this condition again, jump the posts on the solenoid with a screw driver. It it turns over normally, it is possibly your solenoid. If it is the same, it would point to your starter.

Also check all of your grounds at this point in time and connections to the battery to make sure they are tight and free of any corrosion.

I would check the voltage to make sure you have above 12.4V. If you do, then I would lean towards replacing your starter.

Lad test the battery, then make a jumper/extender from the positive of the starter and give it juice,,see if the starter responds normally.
