Carbon seal

My carbon seal started leaking so I ordered a new one. OEM seadoo seal btw. I put it on and push it all the way back & it was pretty loose. I redo it and scoot the seal up some & it’s pretty tight now but I can still pull it back if I pull pretty hard. Is this normal? Just wanna double check before I go ride tomorrow. Seal also is scrunched just a tad. I attached a photo. Thanks guys.

Did you also replace the stainless steel hat that rides on the carbon seal and the rubber accordion boot? Those parts can cause leaks and/or cavitation if they are deteriorated. The accordion boot in the picture does not look like it is seated all the way to the hull fitting and the ribs look like it is applying uneven pressure to the seal. I replaced mine with all WSM parts and I needed to use a lever to push the hat down far enough to put the clip on the driveshaft.

Yep I did. All new. I pulled it off the hull fitting a little because I saw on other threads, guys were saying it was ok to pull it up a little.

I have read that also but I thought it was in reference to old boots that had lost some compression due to age. I would think that the oem replacement parts for your ski would provide the proper pressure fully seated. But since I did not use oem parts I can only tell you what I noticed on my install. Maybe someone on the forum who has replaced a lot of seals using oem parts could tell you if that is normal or not.

Yes you should replace the rubber boot also.

Even when perfect you will still be able to pull it back away from the stainless hat.

Rubber boot is replaced :) I just wanted to make sure it was normal to be able to pull it back. I’ve seen some videos where people can’t pull it back unless they pry something in there against it

The manual describes a measurement between a properly compressed boot and a totally relaxed boot. As the seal wears and boot gets weaker, it suggests a spacer between the boot and hull to provide more pressure to the seal. As said, a totally new seal and boot should be fine just resting against the hull, and not "scrunched" up for what appears to be to much pressure on the seal and hat. Adjusted properly, you should be able to move it by hand some. Your install appears to be to much pressure on the seal, hence the odd looking scrunched boot.
