Carb filter replacement/accelerator pump

Hi all, I've got a 97 challenger thats seen pretty limited use, but since I've owned it (for 8 years) I've had issues at takeoff. It'll die if I jam the throttle, but if I feather it some and can get past the dead spot, the boat takes right off. I saw on another thread here that my issue is most likely the accelerator pump or clogged nipples.

A guy at a shop here seems to think it's probably the in-carb filter.

So today i figured I'd fianlly try to solve my problem instead of having to baby the throttle. So on to my question:
I see the brass nipples coming in the side of the carb and the brass elbows as mentioned in the above thread. I couldn't get the carb cleaner to spray out the nipples so I think they're plugged. So my thought was to take off the brass elbows and soak them. that works fine for the PTO carb, but the mag carb has the pulse pump body in the way.

Also, I figured changing/cleaning the in-carb filter might be a good thing to do also.

Now I'll say that I'm new to working on carbuerators. I'm a mechanical engineer and can figure how to take anything apart and put it back together but I'm used to designing electromechanical things, not things with fuel and carbuerators. The carb rebuild walkthroughs seem simple enough, but it's all the fine tuning adjustments afterward that I don't fully trust myself to do. I really want to avoid pulling the carbs.

Can I replace these filters without pulling the carbs? (I don't mention the accel pump because if I get the pulse body off to change the filter, the brass nipple problem is solved incidentally). Has anyone ever attempted this? It looks to me that the screws holding the cover on the PTO carb might be short enough to take them out without pulling the mag carb. Also, the mylar membrane under the pulse pump body looks like it could be troublesome to replace if not on a benchtop.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wish you lots of luck with this as I have no idea how any of that stuff works. Hopefully someone here can give you some sound advice and get you back on the water as soon as possible.
