I have just got done rebuilding my carb well I actually purchased a new OEM carb and now I have a small issue with my engine it backfires through its single carb when at just over half throttle. On the water it cant get oven 10 miles per hour when it backfires. Will backfiring keep me from going faster? I have heard that my rotary valve timing might be off and the cause of backfire. I would appreciate it if anyone can explain to me how I can adjust the rotary valve so I can stop the backfire.
MODEL: 1997 GTI
ENGINE: 717 TYPE
SINGLE CARB

THANK YOU ALL

Backfiring........

Although, a lot of the time, backfiring is caused from the rotary valve not being on in it's proper time, it is also caused by the improper set up of the carb.

You said OEM. Did you check the spring, lever and needle valve in it to ensure it was the correct size for your motor?........

Seadoosnipe, I appreciate your reply, I REALLY DO

My previous carb was backfiring also so I purchased a new one thinking it was all in the carb, but apperantly it does not seem to be. I agree it could very well be in the carb settings and type carb but I made sure it was the right carb and the spring lever and needle valve seem to be at correct position/setting.
I also experincing on top of the backfiring a drop in rpm once I go let say 1/3 full throttle it boggs down then picks back in that sequence so In the water I can idle great and accelerate good but to about 15mph then It backfires and revs down and up. This all started to happen after my battery would not turn the engine anymore so I installed a new batt and new plugs and from there on It done this:confused:. Hope that might help

Thanks so much I really wish I did not have to ask you guys for help but I can't figure it out, I LOVE Ridding but they can be extremely frustrating.

Most certainly....

I think you found your problem!........sorry for not seeing your thread earlier. I've tried to get to all threads but sometimes, I miss one or two.

Yes, if your "0" ring is deteriorated to the degree that you have gaps or a way for air to pass, then your not able to get the manifold pressure you need for your carb to draw in fuel to the engine.

Good job on finding that............

Thanks snipe I get my new "O" RINGS tomorrow I ordered from Seadoowarehouse and Im getting it in one day! I will let you know how it goes

Thanks so much

Well I have never been more frustrated in my life! I got the two O-Rings from Seadowarehouse put them in and set the RV Valve also and and she fired up but It backfires at halfthrottle and up and also bogging down. I now decided to test the Rectifier and I found out it is not giving charge to my battery:ack:
So my question is can a BAD rectifier be the cause of my troubles? Think my rectifier could be bad, I only did one test which was place a voltmeter on the battery and rev it up and see if It was charging and no go.

Thanks for your time and help

Joey:(
