okay guys since this is the "off topic" section, and yall have helped me save tons of cash on my ski i want to pick some of the car guys brains a little bit...

the girl is away with her family on a cruise so i have her car for the week.. (better mpgs then my truck).. its an 05 mistu lancer.. but when i go over a bump a certain way at a decent speed (30+ mph) i get a nasty bouncing around sound from the front passenger area... the best i can describe it is like sticking a spoon inside a pot and smashing all the sides really fast.. (insert crappy description comments here _________ :biggrinjester:) im thinking its a strut but how can i check without bring it to a shop and paying the diagnostic fee lol.. i kinda want to get the car in tip top shape for her before they come back from vaca..

thanks in advance for bearing with me on this one

Have you tried the CV joints and or wheel bearing.
Get some ramps and get underneath. A rip torn CV boot is easy to see.
Or jack up a wheel and check wheel bearing or play in wheel. Then you can get underneath.

I just don't trust my widow maker car jack (the scissors oem type)

I assume its an auto AWD since a girl drives it?
:auto:

I found this.

i havent really tried anything yet i wanted to get some ideas before i went out there and gave it a go..

its an auto FWD

does give a pretty nice massage to the steering wheel going at any speed over 60 mph too.. its as straight as an arrow when you let go of the wheel but it just shakes really violently.. i havent driven this car since she got it a year and a half ago as we usually take my truck everywhere we go, and since she doesnt complain about it it kinda makes me feel like a horrible dude letting her drive this car like this! haha

Start with balanced tires.

Start with balanced tires.

 touche my friend... ill bring it to the tire shop tomorrow... im not too too handy with diagnosing problems.. i can fix em somewhat, just cant figure out what i have to fix ahah.. yeahh, im a keeper

Try jacking up the car on the front side where you think the wheel is coming off of the ground, and grab the tire on the sides and try and shake it back and forth like you were trying to take the wheel off. Then grab the top and bottom of the tire and shake it back and forth the same way.

I cant remember which one is which, but if there is play side to side then I think you may have a bad tie rod, and if there is play up and down then there is a bad wheel bearing. Dont quote me on that, that might be backwards but is a good starting point.

yep... jack it up... and start pulling/pushing on the tire. Make sure there isn't anything loose. OR... that the spring isn't broken.

These guys are definitely on the right track, but they both forgot one of the most important steps... after you have the front of the car in the air... please please please PLACE A JACK STAND UNDER NEATH and let the stand support the weight of the car, also make sure you chock the rear tires and apply the e-brake(if possible)

Make sure that you jack the car up in a manor that allows the suspension to relax(with little to no weight on it)... and CReynoldsMIZ is right... play side to side is tie rod, up and down is wheel bearing or ball joint. Also you can lay to the side of the tire and shake on it while watching the suspension components for any movement.

I think Dr Honda may be close though in suggesting a broken coil ... and if that is the case be extra careful if you are driving it anywhere as the spring can move and cause more damage(ie. wearing a hole in a tire)

Hope this helps ... let us know what you find under there

the diagnostic fee surprises me, i've been driving old cars for years and years, and i've never paid a diagnostic fee, ever....

Check the sway bar end links. To see if you have a blown strut, an easy way to check is to look at the strut body, if it's oily it's blown and there is no dampening left and allowing the strut to beat itself to death. The end links are notorious for failing on sway bars.

Here's a youtube vid for a lancer, but probably not your year but you get the idea.

This is so funny, I didn't realize all of the "seadoo techs" over on the 2 Stroker board were also car techs. I guess it's just one of those things, we don't like ppl touching our skis, or our cars either! The only thing I hate worse than the Powersports dealer is car dealers and car repair shops! Guess that's why I drive old cars I can work on and drive them easy lol

Haha yeah you two stroke guys are master mechanics... I guess that's why I sold the 2 stroke and bought a 4tec haha

Well I went down to get the wheels balanced and turns out she smashed a pot hole so bad it bent the rim and since they don't make those rims anymore I found a steal on Craigslist 150 bucks for 4 brand new rims am with brand new continental tires.. Got them mounted up in the car today and its riding much better.. It still has a slight clunk over bumps and when I turn on the highway at like 70 to the left it makes a sound and a little vibration but not when I bare to the right at the same speed.. From what I understand this is could be the wheel bearing so tomorrow ill jack it up and give it a tug and let y'all know what's going on with it

Thanks for the help so far!
