Hello all. I am new here and have a question. I have a 1994 xp seadoo that I am working on. The ski runs great, it is just the apperance of it. The stering cover, storage cover, and grab handle, have been bleached out by the sun. I was thinking of painting it black with a marine paint product instead of buying all new pieces, but i still want it to look sharp. Is this a possibility, and if so, what type of paint would be recomended and how should I apply it?

AWESOME!! I just looked up the product and this is perfect!!! Do you recomend using the clear coat gloss or satin for the plastice for this. What about the adhesion promotor, worth it? Thanks for your help with this man. I can't wait to get this going. Your boat looks great!!!

I used all 3, and yes it was worth it, make sure you scrub everything very clean befor starting the process, and thankx.

I went to Lowes and purchased the Vaspar Plastic paint and it worked great on my Challenger 1800. I painted my dash, Glove compartment, grab rails and anything else that was plastic....

I stumbled upon this thread and just wanna say thanks to Shakedown! My seat needs a little bit of help in life lol! I was wondering if you can use this on the top of the cubby as well?

My $.02...
-Use high quality paint.
-High gloss for a greater shine, satin finish for less shine.
-Get a good quality top coat/clear coat to protect the paint itself.
-Use adhesion promotor on ALL plastics. Bulldog makes a great one.
-Clean thoroughly. Wash everything with a good cleaner to remove dirt, oils etc. and then use something like acetone to completely remove and residual residue.
-Don't over spray. It's easy to get drips.
-Take your time. The slower and more patient you are the better the outcome.

I was wondering on the seat which is vinyl and the padding on the hanles which is foam, do I need to put a top coat on it ? I dont see why it would be needed.

Im easily amused!

Ok so Im easily amused what can I say. Thanks to this thread I have been smiling for the past hour. I included before and after pics. I used Krylon Fusion for plastic and vinyl! For $4.69 I thought I would give it a shot. I did cover up the seadoo lettering, I dont have a steady hand ha! So far all is well and ready to paint some other faded things lol you guys created a monster! :reddevil: Anyhow, Im amp'd and had to share!:hurray:

The top coat is to help protect the paint from things like UV exposure, chemical/fuel contact etc...While prep is the most important part of the painting process, its also important to protect the paint after you apply it. Otherwise it will fade or get dorked up and you will be back at square one. Its worth the extra time......fo sho!!!

Can you paint your seat too?

So your tellming me you can you krylon/overtons or whatever other kinda plastic/vinyle paint and use it on your seat as well? and it will NOT rub off after your out on the water sitting and sliding on it? Seems like it would rub off all over your trunks... I know this is a old thread but I just bought a xp that needs some clean up and was hoping to go all black on the green areas including the seat if possible, otherwise i will get a seat cover.. thanks for any input.

Nope, the only part(s) I would paint with Krylon or another plastic paint is the hard plastic smooth parts, and only if other methods fail. I painted my gauge cover and handlebar cover of my 96GSX. Also remember preparation is everything make sure the surface is clean and dry, wet sand the surface.

As far as vinyl, definitely not, vinyl dye is a waste of time, you can recover the seat yourself.

Lou, I think that's what were you talking about the "New Site improvement" that if msg can be popped up, this thread is too OLD and the OP hasn't been on site since 2009 .. Just Kidding

If you're not trying to change the color of the plastic components (and I do mean plastic, not vinyl), you can bring back a lot of the color and luster by using the old heat gun trick. I've even had good success with a propane torch. I've had problems with plastic paints in the past because their heat expansion coefficients are different from those of the plastic. That means when the plastic heats up, it stretches out the paint. Then when it cools down, the plastic shrinks just a little more than the paint, allowing the paint to flake off. That krylon plastic adhesion paint is a POS. Looks good the first day, but a year later, you have a ratty looking ski again. It could be because I used a urethane clear coat, but regardless, the plastic paint came right off the plastic. Maybe the adhesion promoter would've helped... For the hood and grab handle, I would def. try the heat trick. What it does is slightly melt the top layer of the plastic, and allow the faded stuff to absorb into the newer colored plastic beneath. Try it, it's amazing!

We paint the plastic parts all the time, we do use high quality paint though, but you can just lighty wetsand your parts then spray them with paint made for plastic like the kyrlon fusion plastic paint.

You can also paint logos on your vinyl parts, I wouldnt paint large areas of vinyl but things like this are fine
