Buzzer warning

My initiation into boating continues. Out today and kept getting a buzzer warning. It appears that it would come because my speedometer was not working properly. It was jumping around and not registering correctly at all. Would that cause the buzzer? Other than the buzzer the boat appeared to be working just fine

nope. there's no warning associated with the speedo. With a bouncing around speedo... most likely... the little paddle wheel on the back is sticking.

So... the warning... was it a "Beep-Beep" kind of thing, or constant?

Yes. Constant, when it came on, but would stop periodically. Any chance water in the fuel filter ?

Found this post in another forum...

"I found a mech. that knew what was wrong. There are two reasons for the beeper going off four times every two min.

1. Low oil.
2. Water in the gas/water filter.

My problem was low oil. Even though I filled the large oil tank I did not fill the small tank attached to the side of the eng. which needed filling because I had let the large tank go down too far."

Thoughts?

I want to thank you for your help and I hope this information might help others.

Thank you.

If you have low oil... the engine will go into limp mode too. But, it's good to get that header tank filled.

Normally a constant beep is an over temp situation. I would make sure to give the engine a good flush. There is a member here who has tapped the hoses at the top of the heads, and that will give a proper back flush.

Anything really. Since the boat is new to you... you don't know the history. SO... it could be that the last owner likes running in the shallows, and may have filled the engine full of mud. Or, it could simply be that you sucked in some trash (or sea grass) and you partly plugged the intake.

Regardless... a good flush will help that.

If you suspect water in the fuel... I would recommend dumping the filter out (or better, changing it) and them put in a heavy dose of marine Stay-Bil in the fuel. It will help it pass.

On that note... I put stay-bil in my boat on every fill up. Since we have alcohol in the fuel, it helps take care of the issues associated with that. (Separation, and water attraction)

I am confident the buzzer is not related to overheating. Or at least actual overheating. Had it on the water this morning and never had the engine much above idle and the buzzer ended up going off and staying. Motor was barely warm when I opened it up. Also, plenty of oil. What else might make the sensor go off?

I read in Mercury M2 210HP Operators Manual:
1. One beep - Normal
2. Continuous - Overheat
3. Four beeps - Low Oil in Engine reservoir.
Note: the low oil 4 beep signal will repeat approximately every 2 minutes.
I had to look this up today, as I replaced the Mercury buzzer, mine was dead. So now I can hear the warning system beeps.
Unfortunately, I am getting the 4 beep warning! Even though I have lots of oil in the engine mounted reservoir? I also replaced the oil reservoir cap (with float sensor) last year??? Not sure what could be causing the warning beeps? Maybe the sensor is faulty? Maybe a broken wire? Any good suggestions on how to test?

I tested the oil reservoir cap with an ohm meter, removed the blue wire and put the meter between the blue wire and the ground... The cap only has those 2 wires! Unscrewed the cap and manually moved the float... Regardless, I did not get any signal at all?
Is there something else I should test, such as shorting out the female side of the blue wire to ground to see if it stops the buzzer warning... Will that work?

For both of you guys....

Take the cap off, and put the meter on the 2 wires. (put it on a continuity setting, or ohms) Turn the sensor upside-down, and the switch should go closed.

To vikingbill: how did you check it for temp? Did you just touch the heads? did you check it with an IR?? (just asking)

OK... over the years, we have see non-standard things happen with these boats. Most are lack or info between Seadoo and Mercury. (There is a sportjet users guide too) And some are people messing with wiring.

So... if you know for a fact, that it's not over heating... I would simply check the senders. (both of them) And then... pull the wire off the bottom of the water separator, and see if the buzzing goes away.

Well, I finally got around to testing the oil level sensor in the small oil canister mounted on the front of the engine... and it checks out good.

So I followed the blue wire and it leads to the ECU box. From there I'm not sure where to go? When I connect the new Mercury buzzer in the helm, I get the 4-beeps every 2 minutes that the manual says is a low oil warning?

Any suggestions?
