Looking at buying a 2002 speedster 160 Mercury EfI 240 V6 2 stroke, 2.5L with 255 hours of runtime. Listing says engine works fine and looks well maintained on the pics. Would this be a wise purchase for a newbie buying his first boat?

It's an 18 year old boat. Run time is irrelevant at this point. It's all about maintenance, and it's general health. It could run another 10 years trouble free... or it could pop on the first ride out.

Get a test drive for sure. Smooth acceleration, hopefully 6200 rpm. Should start easily. Arrive a few minutes early to see what the owner might be doing to it.

Are you ready and able to do all the work on the boat and engine yourself? No one else will work on them.
