My son picked up a 95 xp with the 657 engine and at the end of the first day went to start and it just spun. No engagement. I read up and found the bendix occasionally sticks. So while pulling it out the whole bedix assembly fell off when pulling it out . The shaft was broke. Anyone ever have a stater shaft break. Only thing I can think of is possibly hydro locked but still, is the starter strong enough to snap shaft ?I'm thinking no. Anyways, before we buy another is there the potential of more internal damage? He bought it from someone who supposedly buys, fixes and repairs these. Lots of stuff was still not working . Thanks.

Chances are it is an aftermarket starter and they are all chinese made junk. This is extremely common of the aftermarket starters.

You need to get a good used OEM one and install new brushes and be done with it.

fully agree with miki.

A quick search on ebay found this one. Pretty decent price. The brush kits to rebuild them are cheap and can be found on amazon, no need to worry about manufacturer with them.

As for the other concerns, start simple. Pull the PTO flywheel cover off and try to spin it by hand. If you can spin it then the starter just failed. if it wont spin then its time to start looking into whats caused this.
