I just purchased a 2001 1800 with the m2 mercury V6 210 hp engine . The engine block is cracked and i may get it welded but it would be nice to find a used replacement . send me a message if anybody has one . thanks
On another note ; today i tried to lift the engine out but it wouldn't come out !!! > i thought i was doing something wrong but after looking at the manual i'm sure it is just STUCK with oxidation . I am afraid to force it any more so i think i will soak it in WD 40 for a few days . Any one else experience to same trouble ??
by the way i am a automobile mechanic .

I was in a similar situation. Mine was left in salt water for some time, and there where some white calcified deposits around the lower part of the engine that made it almost impossible to dislodge the mounting plate from the pump. The motor came out with a little bit of work, but the plate took some serious prying and some WD40.

One thing to keep in mind if you are using the lifting eye is that the eye is not position at the center of gravity, so the motor tends to tilt towards the transom once you start lifting. This will almost always cause it to bind againts the studs, and that makes it hard to lift the motor out.

In my case, in addition to using the lifting eye, I also tied a strong strap around the expansion chamber and tied the strap around the hoist so that I had the motor supported in in such a way that it didnt tilt once I started lifting. With this, I was able to lift straight up, and with a little bit of prying, the motor came loose.
The key for me was lifting straight up to avoid binding against the studs.
Hope this helps.

I am asuming that you got all the nuts. There should be 11 total nuts securing the motor to the mounting plate.

I have been trying to pull this engine out for almost two days now with no success . I soaked it with WD 40 and lifted the boat right off the trailer and the front part of the engine just separates around 1/16 but the back part is still stuck . Unbelievable !!! i could see the oxidation around the bolt holes .
Anyhow i was pretty disappointed to find the cylinder sleeve broken also ! now i really need a complete engine . I read somewhere that mercury outboards are the same .??? anybody ??? I expected more feedback from this forum .

I rebuilt my motor in the thread "Motor full rebuild pictures." When searching for parts, you can find with listing as Mercury 2.5 or sportjet. This motor is actually a 2.5 merc that is designed for the sport jet. You may be able to find a block on ebay but I think you need to see the extent of the damage as it sounds like a thrown rod. If the crank is ruined along with the block you really need a complete short block. The carb versions are lower horsepower vs. the fuel injected versions. There are no internal differences. I did read a thread about the block design and I believe the exhaust ports were smaller on older blocks.

With pulling the motor, maybe the pump / crank splines are seized / stuck. Try to pull straight. Can you get between the motor and pump with a small pry bar? I would be very gentle here but you could maybe work it around the perimeter of the flange to get it broken loose. THe motor only weighs 200 pounds so be carefull as if the back of the boat is lifting and it breaks loose it is going to pop pretty good... Also, no stray nut that was missed??

Good luck,
Dave

Thanks for that information . I figured the spines are seized together and i don't see a way of spraying it . I spoke to a local Mercury shop and he tells me a brand new engine ( or as they call it in the boat world " power head " ) is 3500 or 2500 if we could fit the Mercury outboard type . He tell me the ports may be different .
I used to know an old man ( now dead ) that was a ship mechanic , he told me that everything was coated with anti seize compound but not the type available at the local store but the dangerous liquid lead type . Don't know if i could still get that stuff .

Finally got the engine out ! days of prying and spraying down with wd 40 did not help . I finally had to drill small holes around mounting studs and soaked the small holes with WD 40 and with a little help from the engine hoist and a big MF pry bar it got loose . No rust just the studs hole oxidized would not release the engine . I found the bottom of the engine really clean and the pump turns easily by hand .
Engine is toast .

performance,

I have a hole in my block on a M2 210 HP 2000 Speedster. I have been looking for an engine. If you happen to find anyone selling these let me know. My son is itching to get on the water. I had similar issues getting my motor out.

I purchased a brand new power head from my local dealership . payed 3400 . I tried to find cheap parts but the total price was not far from the new power head . I purchased this boat with a broken block and a lot of missing parts . Took me a long time to hunt down every part and i should have it done by next week . Thankfully i live in south Florida so the weather is always perfect . This project took way more time than i expected and exceeded my budget . I'm not far from $ 9000 invested and have not even got in the water yet .

Thanks for following up. At that numer, you must have the nicest merc challenger out there. :) Give us a pic or two when done.

During reassemble i found something interesting you should all know about . The hose that leads from the top of the head to the back of the boat was completely blocked !!! With the hose blocked the engine quickly over heats .It is connected to a brass fitting on it's hull it was near impossible to reach and get it off .

Good thing you found it.
With what was it blocked?....caked up sand/mud/dead fishy things?????

Just out of curiosity, what made you look into the hose?

yes blocked with everything you mention . I didn't want to replace it because it seemed impossible to reach . at first i tried cleaning it out but it was plugged most of it's length . I had to get in a upside down position to get to that hose !
And why did i check ? I am a master mechanic ....i check everything .

finally started the engine this week and expect to get in the water by Friday. Unbelievable amount of money and time i put into this boat and don't see the end . Everything is bad . before getting it started i could not get fuel into the fuel pump , pressurized the tank and still no fuel . I found that there is a check ball in the fuel line the was stuck !
On a good point , i am amazed of how easily this engine starts from cold .
On a bad point the steering is very loose and cable is stiff . i guess i will have to replace both soon .

First day on the water ! got it up to 50 out in the ocean , jumping waves , jumpy jumpy , good thing i didn't take my kids out . This was a trial run , engine ran perfectly , engine cooling fine , water pumping out of the rear port . Steering needs to be repaired , stiff cable and loose steering box . Went down the coast about 20 miles and back and burned around one third to half tank

Congrats.
just make sure you break it in properly. Long but easy rides with fluctuating throttle speeds and no WOT for the first tank of gas.
Check your manual for further and more complete instructions.

Good Luck

Thanks , now getting ready for the outing with the family . Installed a Bimini top today . I got a major sunburn yesterday with sun block applied and still in pain .
Seems like the steering cable loosened up which is good news , but still got to repair of replace steering box . Anybody have any experience with that ? I noticed the center bushing is way loose , i am going to take it apart and see if it is repairable .
