I bought a single place trailer for $250 and it came with a 1996 GTX 787. From what I was told about it is the seller bought it from a friend and never did anything with it. The friend never had it running and his friend bought it from a lady who had a bunch of work done to it at the dealer before she sold it. The work done was unknown but it should run. What I have discovered is there is no dess key and the starter is junk. I pulled the drive apart and everything there looks good. It is complete minus the key. I made a tool to turn the pto with a drill to do a compression test and was impressed with the numbers. With the lack of knowledge from the seller I'm concerned with weather it was winterized. Is there a simple way to test for that in the boat or key areas I should inspect? Anything else that could be checked out before buying parts? If the engine itself is good I'd get it going otherwise I'll just sell it to someone to part out.

You aren't going to be able to test the compression without a starter. Without knowing the compression it really isn't going be possible to know if the engine has potential.

There is no bypass for the DESS.

That must be one heck of a drill.

It is possible. You could try pulling the head to inspect.
