Have 97 challenger 1800 and both engines started backfiring at same time. Couple weeks ago ran it hard for 1/2 tank gas, all was well. This week, filled it up, premix, and running well for 1/2 tank. Suddenly, both engines started backfiring badly, could see flames shooting out carb. Was able to limp in with both 787s sputtering at about 2.5K tach. Am thinking that maybe water in gas since both engines have that in common. But, running well for 1/2 tank. Is there an easy way to check gas for water, any other ideas?

easy way to check for bad fuel system is to bypass everything and rig up a gravity fed new fuel source directly into the carb.
