My boat won't start when I turn the key . The only way I can get it to start is if someone turns the key while I manually open the throttle body.
Has anyone had a similar issue? Or can someone explain why I have to start it like that?

Dr Honda is the Merc guy. It is either a fuel or air issue though. So check all filters at a minimum. It could also be a TPS type issue (assuming there is a TPS or something like it on a Merc).

Yep... we hear this one all the time. It's normally....

1) Bad TPS or Port side temp sender. (lightly floods the engine)

2) Bad spark. If the trigger is bad, you will lose spark on a couple cyl, and it will idle low, and be hard to start. (and peak RPM is low)

3) One cyl is blown.

Also when the engine is off an I up the throttle body after it has been running it's a little smokey , don't know if that normal , when I start it up its rides fine, haven't noticed a difference

Smoke is normal during low RPM's. Mine is adjusted dead on... but if it's cold, or if I'm idling for a while... it will start to smoke. Heck... when I first put it in... it will fog out the dock. But, push the throttle a bit, and it clears up.

The TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) is on the starboard side of the throttle body.

The Temp sender in question is on the Port side head.
