Boat surging at idle speed, is this normal?

I think the idle speed should be a constant rpm but the boat seems like it idles up and down, it helps at steering while it gives a bit of thrust to keep me moving in the no wake zones but is this normal and if it isnt what could be causing it? 2002 sea doo utopia 205 EFI m2 jet drive.

The mercury engine will increase from 1000rpms to around 2000 rpms when you turn the helm to full port or full starboard AND you have the throttle in netrual or "slight" forward or reverse. This is normal and a much desired feature for slow speed manuvering. Next time you are next to the dock with the boat at idle turn the helm port or starboard and see what happens. You can also test it on the trailer AFTER you have hooked up and turned on the water hose.

Very cool! That's good to hear! I just bought the boat and was wondering if what the seller was telling me was true or was it a problem that they were hiding! I think I have me a great boat that definitely will get used well! This forum is like no other boat owner thread. I feel very comfortable owning a boat that so many other people have the same interest and love for their toys! Thanks again!

I had the issue of the steering assist being all out of line and the first time I dropped the boat in the water and turned at idle, I took off like a shot. It was an easy adjust according to the marine mechanic up there but scared the crap out of me. lol.

It was close. I have to drift in to dock. an hr later we had it fixed but I was a little concern about taking the dock out and my kids standing on it. All good now.
