I've been playing with JetSki's since the late 70's. My first was a 1978 JS440.
Over the years, I have taken the safety classes a bout 4 times. Locally, I took it again 2 years ago, and it was fun. It was held at the local SeaDoo shop. They charged $20, but they had doughnuts and muffins for breakfast, and they made hamburgers, and hot dogs for lunch. Also... they had drinks available all day during the class. So... the $20 was really to cover the food.
I think the mandatory safety class is a VERY good thing. Back in the day, a stand-up jetski was hard to ride, and they only made 28hp. So, they were slow, and the riders had to think about what they were doing. But, now... any drunk Hill-Billy can own a 300hp, 80 mph ski, and kill someone. And since there are no federal laws about "Open Containers" with boats... DRUNK driving is common with jetskis.
