Blown gasket

Hi,

I am a real newbie and this is the first time i am attempting to fix something myself on my ski.

I had my ski in for repair where they said they replaced the gasket on the exhaust manifold.

I took it out today for the first time and the ski would only accelerate whilst i held the throttle half way, if i attempted to increase the throttle past that point it would make a different noise and not accelerate any faster. It seemed to work the engine more for no acceleration. there also seemed to be an "airy" noise. After a while of full acceleration I could smell fuel like it was flooded and it would run poorly for a while.

When i took it out it was quite full with water and when i took it home and ran it with clean water i noticed water spraying out of the metal tube (which i assume is the exhaust??? does this have water in it) when i accelerated faster more water started spraying out and the gasket popped out further realeasing a stream of water.

Would this cause the problem of the lack of acceleration on the water? is it easy to replace the gasket?

Welcome to the seadoo forum markymark. It sounds like the servicing shop didn't repair the gasket as they were paid to do so. If the exhaust gasket is leaking it will not have the proper back pressure the engine needs to run properly. The second part of the problem is a leaky exhaust gasket will fill the engine compartment up with water too. I suggest you call the repairing shop and see if they will repair the problem under warranty because they installed it to begin with. I would call and ask first before you bring it in to them in case they won't repair it for free. If that is the case the exhaust gasket isn't a hard thing to replace and we could help you get it completed. Deal with the leaky exhaust first and go from there.

I'd be hesitant, to let them work on my ski again, but do demand your money back, if at all possible. If not, then you'll have no choice, but to let them try to fix original problem, again....good luck.
 
Hi guys,

thanks for the quick and detailed responses.

In regards to the shop, I already had an argument with them when I picked up and therefore got the "repair" for free. I went to pick it up and it wouldnt start in the yard. Got it running when i got home though.

In regards to the other issue, I have attached a few photos to show the problem. Close up of gasket as well as some of engine bay.

Yes the leak was there when running a hose, not high pressure though, dont have much in our neighbourhood.

Here's what I would do. Replace the bad gasket in the exhaust and go from there. It is a simple thing to do. If you replace the gasket chances it will resolve you problem. If you still have a problem after words you still need to replace the bad gasket anyway and it will be one less thing that could be causing another problem. You could order a new gasket from out parts link at the top of the page or click on my parts link in my avatar.

do you need any special glue/sealant/grease to place around the gasket or just place and tighten?

how long would it take to get the part to perth Western Australia if i ordered from you?
 
While the ski's down, remove the pipe and inspect the gasket. Maybe the bolt/s aint tight/stripped, so, just need sealant, and while ur at it, REPLACE the fuel lines....:rofl:, :cheers:
 
Oh, Perth Australia...I'm not sure, check the web site for shipping details. You could use it dry or a little "form a gasket" to add a little protection.

What is the go with replacing the fuel lines. Could this be causing the problem or are the ones i have just crap?

Also what manuals, books, etc would you recommend to help me learn how t fix, maintain or know what the parts are I am looking at in the engine?

Here is a great idea for you;
As a premium member you can down load a authentic seadoo manual from the seadoo manual library. In the library is a variety of manuals for almost all years and models. You can view as many as you like on line as a PDF file, or download it and print it for your personal and private use. There are operator manuals and repair manuals for you to do your own repairs on your seadoo. The repair manuals have everything from troubleshooting, repair procedures to winterizing. It contains wire diagrams torque specs and pictures for disassemble and assemble instructions. In the spec sheets it tells everything needed to maintain oil changes, spark plug gaps, carburetor rebuilds and impeller wear ring tolerances. Click on the "Seadoo Manuals" link at the top of the page for more details. If you need any help or get in a jam, we are always here to answer your questions too. Premium members get priority when it comes to getting quick detailed answers.

If you have gray fuel lines you need to replace them with black fuel lines available from auto parts stores like Auto Zone. Measure the length you need and bring a sample with you so you get the correct size. Replace one at a time so you don’t get them mixed up. If you need clamps replace them too. Use small stainless steel clamps also from the auto parts store.
