First post here, the forum is great and I have learned a lot so far. Anyways I recently purchased a 2003 Seadoo Sportster 4-Tec and just filled it up with gas for the first time. After finishing filling it up, gas leaked out of the black plug below the gas cap. Not sure what this is called. After taking the boat out and coming back to the dock (in the river, current was pretty strong) I bumped the dock and it knocked the cap for the vent off. I need to order a new cap but I am not sure what it is called or what part number to order. Any help would be appreciated. Also I have some white smoke coming from the left rear side of the boat when running is this normal?

Thanks,
Micah

That plug near the gas cap is the gas tank vent, all boats have them. The gas tanks need to be vented to the outside and not inside the boat or bad things could happen. If gas came out of that vent then you likely overfilled the tank, when I fill mine I always peek into the engine compartment and watch it fill, then stop the pump when it looks full. You also stated that you knocked the cap off this vent, it is not a big deal and you should be able to get one from any marina or online parts sites as they are pretty standard on most boats. When I bought my boat the vent cap was also missing and I never bothered to replace it, but I may someday.

The white smoke you speak of is coming out of the exhaust port of the boat. This is normal. In order to cool the exhaust gases (so the heat does not melt the boat) water is injected into the hot exhaust to cool it. During the process the water turns to steam and exits the exhaust hole at the back of the boat. As long as the coolant level in the reserviour does not drop, your boat is operating normally.

Welcome to the forum by the way, and I hope this helps!

Thank you for the reply. This answered my questions. I found the part which maybe the "fitting perko" (part number 293710015) that is 10.99 I believe does this sound correct?

Thanks,
Micah

No, I believe that is the output for the bilge pump. What you want is called 'vent boat' Part # 275500206.

See number 14 from this parts diagram: http://rivaracing.onlinemicrofiche.com/showmodel.asp?Type=13&make=seadoojb&a=105&b=8&c=0&d=-FUEL-SYSTEM

It looks like you may need to buy a whole new fitting as the cap is not sold separately. Before ordering the entire part, I might stop by a marina or two if it is convenient and see if they can set you up with just the cap as this part is fairly universal on most boats.

Once again thank you. I will check at the local marina and see if they have any thing similar. If they don't I will order the whole part.

Thanks,
Micah
