Bigger capacity fuel tank for an SPX???

I go riding with my best friend who has a 94 wave raider. For every 1/4 tank he's using, I'm using a half. Although it's not an issue on the small lake we frequent, on a bigger lake it is gonna be a bigger deal. His capacity is close to 11 gallons, I think, and mine is 9. However, my SPX seems to be way more thirsty than his wave raider.

Has anyone successfully installed a larger capacity fuel tank in their ski? With a larger tank, I would also need a longer fuel sending baffle in order for the fuel gauge to read correctly.

A gas tank from a 96GTI will fit in an X-4 hull, I believe you will need to modify the front storage bin. The 96GTI has a 12 gallon capacity. There was a thread about this, but I can't find it.

i think the tank can be from any of the 94-95 gtx, 95-2001? GTS, or 96 GTI. the downside is you lose nearly all of your storage in the front compartment. basically enough room for the fire extinguisher and a bottle of water and that's it. is your buddy's waveraider a 701? i would think the 1100 or 760 raider would use as much or more fuel as a 787.

I'm assuming I would also need the accompanying baffle for the larger tank, correct?

You will definitely need a longer baffle, not so much for the fuel gauge, but to get the extra gas out of the tank, if you use the old fuel baffle you'll still effectively only have a 9 gallon tank.

i'd suggest when your shopping for a tank, try to get the baffle at the same time, I made the mistake of not asking about the baffle and then had to search for that item too, I won't make that mistake again.

also, since the engine has to come out for this project, what I did was wait for a blown top end then did it, or at least wait for winter.

We put one in a 98 spx we did.

the hardest part is running the new fill tube. If you dont have it right the fuel will shoot back out while you fill it.

Thanks for the link! What model and year was that tank out of? Any tips on running the fill tube properly?

Looks like it will also take longer bungee chords. Or will the originals stretch far enough?

I can't remember if we used different stretch cords, but I have like 90 bungee's laying around so who knows.

the fill tube, getting it right, was a major pain in the azz. I ended up buying a very expensive piece of 2" fuel filler hose from an auto supply store, it cost like $45 for 4' of it and even then I still had to fill the tank slowly, like at half speed at the gas station to make sure it didn't backflow out. The problem is that you have to kind of go down then around where what's left of your storage bin will be, then to the fill spout which is in a bad spot for proper flow.
