SO ..I inherit this xp as a non-runner and have been trying to find the "smoking gun" if you will. The previous owner gave up on it and it sat for 3 yrs. I am cleaning the tank, carbs, fuel lines, etc and havent even gotten to the point of a start up yet.

So I am working on fuel supply check valve vent line situation and notice that the water bypass is "filled in". I pulled off the line at the exhaust head and low and behold I find the entire line filled with dried sweat bee carcasses (the kind that plug small holes with mud). I am pretty sure this shouldnt cause any type of problems - after all -isn't this just a check port so that you can see that there is water flow... and if it were to be clogged, the excess would just dump into the exhaust pipe?

Removal....

I'd remove and clean the entire system. If it's what we call, 'mud dobbers', they build with mud. So, when you hit it with water, this mud can settle in the resonator, possibly restricting flow. This system is usually just held in place with a bungee cord type system.

I think it in your best interest (if it's sat up that long) to clean out anything you find that has this type buildup and history of not running.

Now, if you just want to hear it fire up before you spend any time and money in it, then you might go that far. But I wouldn't depend on the exhaust system blowing it out.

Putting back pressure on your exhaust can do more harm than good.......

definitely going through all the basics..carbs rebuilt, fuel lines replaced..pulled the exhaust system and made sure no mice etc...

so are you saying that a clogged bypass vent line could cause the motor to either run funny or overheat etc? thanks for the fast reponse. bc3

just got done 3hrs to remove entire exhaust, head and all the lines...dang bees filled EVERY line end to end (even into the head itself)

that could have caused a problem eh? bc3
