long story short.......

Yesterday I wrote that i couldn't start my GTI.

got a reply that I should check and clean my battery post.

-Today cleaned the post and my starter still wouldn't turn the engine. (maybe 1/4 turn...maybe)

-So I disconnected the starter from the electrical box, after I disconnected the battery and, just for a second, tried a direct connect only the starter to the 12vdc battery and it acted the same as if I were trying to start it normally. The starter would not turn the engine with it directly connected to the battery.

Just to be clear.......no other electrical components were connected to the battery while I tried this test. I was only putting direct power to the starter only to test it.

I took the sparks plugs out of the head, prior to doing the direct test to the starter, and the engine block would turn without the resistance of the cylinder compression.

The battery is good and with this test I believe that the starter is bad.

Does anybody disagree? And if so what could be causing the starter to not allow it to turn the motor over?

If the starter turns the motor over fine with the plugs out, then most likely your starter is fine. It sounds like your battery is bad, use a jumper pack or a known good battery.

I tried it with another known good battery and I also tried the direct contact with only the starter to the known good battery and I still have the same result.....the motor will try to trun at first but does not. I thought at first the battery was bad too, until I tried the second battery.

I also found that the 12vdc solenoid that activates the starter draws down to 4 to 6vdc while the cable to the starter is connected when I try to start it and when I remove this cable from the solenoid it is 12vdc when I try to start it.

This is my first jet ski and I'm learning as I go. Thank you for any and all suggestions that I may get.

check all your grounds and connections, especially the ground at the motor.

so, the starter won't turn the motor with the plugs out? does the motor turn over easily by hand with the plugs out? if yes to both of these, it probably is a bad starter. take it out and tear it apart, many times starters internals can just be cleaned up and they are fine, brushes will get stuck from corrosion.
