Just bought a 1996 GTX. Previous owner said it had some starting issues. Some times it would start fine all day then all of a sudden it would roll over and over and not start. I bought it at a good price brought it home checked all the connections put dialectic grease in all of them. Put a brand new gel battery in it and vroooom it fires right up. Yeah right shut it off never had it hooked to hose or anything so i shut it off right away. Get the hose ready hook it all up. Get ready to fire the engine and then the hose, but now it won't fire. Flashing 12volt low and no beeps when I put the lanyard on. Check for fire NONE??? Could this be a bad rectifier?

Nope , rectifier only affects things later on.

You have a dead battery or one with less than 310 CCA or the ground wire between the battery and engine is bad or the terminals are bad.

That thing will NOT fire if the cranking voltage drops below 10.5V. This thing will fool you often!! Als check the bolt on the bottom of the coil with all the ground wires on it.
Ditch it and replace that with a stainless nut and bolt. Its better than screwing into plastic :P

P.S spark does not jump from the plug to the head. It only jumps from one wire to the other wich is the oposit of an automotive style ignition system. So when you check for spark next time make sure the voltage while cranking is somewhere like 11-12V and that you have two plugs in the engine and two more plugs in the caps that are touching eatchother or both lying on the head touching something metal.
Could also be the positive lead going from the battery to the solenoid.

Well... not exactly. A shorted regulator can drain a battery.

But I do agree with the battery being low.

Just because a battery is new, doesn't mean it has a proper charge, or that it's good. (I've seen a lot of new batteries be bad out of the box over the years)

I think my 1996 GTX might have a bad rectifier. It runs perfectly fine, but last time I went to the lake and took the battery tender off of the NEW battery, it was dead. I've since replaced the battery and the tender, so we'll see. Batteries+ said the original battery they sold me was bad, so I don't know...maybe just got a bad battery.

I GOT IT!!! All fixed. I found a bad ground wire from the started to the battery. Just touch it now and it fires up can't wait to get it on the lake this weekend. Thanks with all your help guys.
