Experts, We have come upon a 2000 Challenger 2000 that supposedly came with a 240 EFI engne. The hull and equipment are very nice but it has no engine at all in it. Apparently the owner had taken it to a shop who pulled the motor to work on it, cost too much for the customer and turned the boat over to the mechanic who then sold it to a third person who then sold it to my brother. What are our options? Are used/rebuilt engines availible? I read that the mercury head unit from a sport jet would work. Any suggestions short of launching it in a blaze of fire? Thanks for your help!

Check this web site http://www.seilermarine.com/outboard-recycle/mercury/sport-jet-powerhead.htm They are listing remanufactured for $3395+core, shipping is included. Since you don't have a core they will add $650 more.
You can also look at pages 11-12 on the attached file from the Mercury website about their remanufactured engines.
I have not delt with either of these two so if you do end up calling let us know how it went.
Also if I have my details right the 2002+up engine went to the electric oil pump so no gears to break and it went to the upgraded low speed steering.

Thanks for the info Racereddie. Looks like I have to do a ton more research. What it looks like is the links you sent were for the powerhead alone. Since the engine was totally removed, all I see from the pics my brother sent me was the plate in the hull where the engine bolts to, a couple of large hoses, the starter and lots of wires. Will the powerheads you sent include all of the necessary parts to bolt right in, or am I going to have to piece it all together. I think I have attached the picture.

Just looking at your picture the 3 gal oil jugs and the fill tube are missing, the battery box and the blower tubes. Your forward/reverse cable and steering cable appear to be connected and it seems like the jet pump is attached but you could have water in the gear box. The powerhead should be ready to bolt on but you will have alot of connecting parts. The large hoses connect the exhaust to the mufflers and you are going to have to check them for dry rot. You do have a mess on your hands but once you get it cleaned up it may start to look like a doable project but it won't be easy. In the motorcycle world this is called a grate case and experience is the tool you will need. There is a member WAJetboating and he will be the true voice of experience and knowledge on the mercury engines. Wait to see what he says and then make your decision on what to do.

Thanks again Racereddie. I appreciate your input and will continue to try and gain more info about this "grate case". I do have tons of experience with the modded 96 GTX (both good and bad!) but this Mercury is a different beast sort of. Brother thought it would be a good project (always falls on my brain since he has trouble tieing his shoes). Have not seen the boat yet. Look forward to the comments of other members as well. Thanks for your assistance, but it appears to have worked out in the end. Evidently the boat still had a lien on the title from the bank and my brother was able to get out of the deal. I was surprised to see how few options there were for such a popular boat. I think we'll stay with Rotax from here! I can rebuild the 787 in my sleep. Thanks again.

I think you had a lucky escape. Yes, you could have dropped an engine in there - but as others noted, in what condition was the jetdrive? How about the other components left behind after the engine was stripped? Based on the appearance of that bilge/engine compartment, it doesn't look like the previous owner(s) took very good care of the boat. That might have explained why the engine was missing... poor maintenance and attention may have led to an engine failure.
When looking for a "project" boat, it's always better to have all the pieces in place even if they have to be replaced. At least then YOU are the one doing the disassembly and can examine everything in situ.
I'd say you lucked out on this one, but for the record I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a project boat with a Mercury engine in it.

Yeah you got lucky. You would have spent way more than that boat was worth.
