Anyone know if I can use my TomTom One on the water?

It is currently trying to find a road when I am on the water.

Is there a way to make it just point me toward my target rather than trying to get me onto a road?

I want it to just point me in the direction of the boat ramp while I am driving.

Off Road

Apparently you need to download and install a program called "Off Road Navigator". I've never tried it because I have a Garmin e-Trex that I use for off road activities.

Google it and do some reading before you try it, and if you want to load it make sure to back up your GPS first.

I ve used my garmin nuvi on the water, I just go to view map. might be diffrent on a tomtom i also turn it on while at the cottage and its not very accurate when on the water. I just used it to gps the top speed and distance traveled kinda stuff.

I have downloaded "Off Road Navigation" but haven't figured out how to install it.

Anyone know how to install 3rd party programs?

I have to admit...TomTom tech support SUCKS!!! No, let me rephrase that...it SUXXXXX!!!

Even google searches on how to install programs is sucky.

They automatically assume you know how to reprogram computers, and give instructions in LINUX...:ack:

Let me clarify...I am the computer Administrator at my job, so I know computers pretty well, and networking, but TomTom is tossing me a wolf-cookie that is irking me and wasting MUCH of my time.

does ur tomtom have an SD card slot?

TomTom SUX!!!

I have gotten help from 3 different sources and each comes to no end.

The best tells me how to install the software, but when I follow the instructions, all that happens is that the damned TomTom copies the folders into a second set of folders within the original folders. I do it again, Another set of folders, but no install. At one point, I had 4 sets of folders installed within themselves. Not a lot of good for me, 4 copies of the same installation program but not an installed program.

About time to post this thing up for sale on ebay and buy a garmin or other REAL GPS device....:ack:

AND NO...not card slot, just built in RAM.

Im lookin at the Garmin colorado 400i can be used any where...

Oh, I got it!.....

I see, it's something to help you navigate!.........oh, that's easy here in the south, Gulf of Mexico. You just count the oil rigs as you pass by so you know where you are! If you pass oil rig number 14, the water goes to 1000 feet so you better have a life jacket aboard. Oh, that's about 125 miles southwest of Dauphin Island..........now, ain't that easy. And it didn't cost me a penny. I guess we call that a "redneck GPS"............

I think what he means is if ya kock you self out know ones swimin to the bottom for ya.... I think i might wear my PFD and hook the dess key to it next summer, almost fliped my boat during the summer LMFAO i was doing WOT and jumped the wake from a 45ft fourwinns that came down off plain so the wake was BIG, lake was like glass at the time so i was doing 53mph when i hit it...

Well, that makes me much more comfortable.

It is good to know that if I sink to the bottom at 995 feet, someone will swim down to get me...:reddevil:

maybe a shark or two....:reddevil: deepest spot on my lake i think is 120ft but in the bay where i mostly boat its 25ft

You need the marine software set for it. I get this information from a boat cap'n, and the info is old. So, I don't know if the waterways data is available for it. I know it was available for the particular GPS navigator he was using.

I have some funny comments but decided I'd better delete them...

But thinking about them...

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Actually, I don't need waterway data. All I want it to do is POINT me toward a goal.

So when I put the boat in the water, I will save the marina as a Point of Interest. Then when I get out into the gulf or lost on the lake, I can ask it to point me toward the marina to get me home, after I burn off a half a tank of gas.

Seems pretty simple, but the Tom Tom won't do it.

I think I will have to buy a 2nd unit NON-TomTom to do this for me.

On the TomTom, when you tell it you want to go to the marina, it tells you to go to the nearest street and drive there. Kinda hard to do in the boat. So I need something that recognizes that sometimes, just sometimes, you are not driving a car on streets, and you might be on foot in the woods, or maybe in a boat on the water, nowhere near a road.

I bought walmart's cheap gps I believe it is called explorest hand held for $100.00 and it willl do what you are looking for. I use it to mark any spot that I ever want to return to it is acurate within 3 feet but the maps are not that acurate. good luck:cheers:

Robin, I will look into that. I don't need a name brand. just something that will get me back to the trailer before I run out of gas.

I use Garmin Products. They are a little pricy but here in Florida if your out in the water and it gets dark you could easly go aground or get lost unless you have nav aids and track back...the fullcolor isn't too bad either. I use the Colorado version. Go to " www.westmarine.com " for details or" www.garmin.com "

Karl im guessing you have the 400c model? I was looking at the colorado 400i for inland lake cause i boat on around the greatlakes but i see westmarine has the 400c right noe for $250 off list. do you know how diffrent theses 2 models are and weather or not i can use the 400c ???

I have the 400c it has all the nav.aids and is in color. If you go to www.garmin.com you can compare the units side by side. The pricing is m.s.r.p. on their site but west marine has about the best price around.
It looks like the 400i is for inland lakes so it might be a better unit for you.
