Air intake gasket 717

Removed intake system to clean carburetor on 2001 GS 717 engine and upon reinstalling the top cover it won’t compress the gasket enough to slide the latches to hold it on the bottom piece. Didn’t touch the gasket when I removed it. It looks like the gasket is oriented in the channel incorrectly and preventing the pieces from fitting properly. Is the gasket supposed to fit the inside of the channel or the outside? Looks like the top piece should slide to one side or the other of the gasket and not compress it. Any ideas?

Put the gasket on the bottom part of the air intake housing first, ribbed side of the gasket facing out. The top should fit on snugly

Also put some silicone grease on the seal.
Correct, the seal goes on the base, not the lid.

Thanks, repositioned the gasket, used some silicone and it went back together as it should.
Replaced all fuel lines and selector valve, went through carb, checked and cleaned as needed, pilot and main jet were not plugged but removed and cleaned along with low and high speed screws. All materials inside looked to be Mikuni brand parts. Started and ran on the hose this morning and seemed responsive. Will test in the water soon.
