Aftermarket Parts for Engine Rebuild

Just tore down a 4TEC engine on a 2008 Wake 215. Previous owner apparently sunk it and left water in the engine. Upon teardown, the cylinders need to be honed or possibly bored (taking to machine shop this week) and the valves need to be cleaned up. Everything else has cleaned up fairly nicely. The pistons are in great shape but the rings were absolutely shot. So I need to source the following parts and wanted to know if anybody knew of any of these aftermarket that would be quality parts but less expensive than OEM. I've seen SBT and WSM pop up a lot as well as a lot of eBay stuff that I'm likely to stay away from unless I can determine the manufacturer. Here's an approximation of what I need. Let me know what non-OEM vendors you'd recommend for this type of stuff. Much appreciated.
  1. Piston ring kit (x3)
  2. Engine gasket kit
  3. Oil pump gaskets
  4. Stretch bolts
  5. Thrust bearings
  6. Crank bearings
  7. Supercharger rebuild kit
  8. Likely a lot more stuff I'm forgetting

Im just rebuilding mine,

Ordering CP piston kits and ARP bolts and OEM head gaskets always.( Although Cometic very good for gaskets also ) Replacing my SC with Riva 17psi unit and tune. Seen lots of bad review on SBT stuff so i stayed away.

CP & ARP Parts held me well when i rebuilt my Subaru STI and they held nearly 800 whp

Hello, I am doing the same with my 2002 4Tec and I have heard the same with SBT. Did you find the parts you needed and who you went through?

Watch out for aftermarket parts. I bough CP Power piston rings which were advertised for my model but only fit aftermarket CP pistons.
Some places such as PWC Greenhulk offer various OEM parts (bearings, bolts etc) in kits which can save you money.
Check Leaders for various kits. Bought a OEM overhaul gasket kit and saved considerable money. SKU: 420889772. Free shipping over $100
Partzilla.com offered a considerable discount on OEM which beat many others.
Bought aftermarket WSM parts such as the drive shaft carbon seal kit. This is a fairly reputable outfit.
I would not buy internal engine parts unless they are OEM. Very expensive if you have a problem.
Avoid Ebay.

Be prepared to invest a couple hundred in dedicated tools you will need.
A complete rebuild kit will cost around $2.0K (including oil pump rebuild kits, rod bearings, timing chain and guides etc) if you do not need to bore out the cylinders. If you do, add another 1K for labor and pistons.
If you have the original heads you may want to replace the valves to get rid of the ones with the heads which break off as mine did. Very costly when this happens.
There are a lot of things you can do wrong when you put this back together. Take a lot of pictures, watch You-Tube video's and carefully study the factory manual.

@cablecarusa I used a mix of WSM (mainly) and OEM parts and everything seems to have worked out fine. I had to bore out the cylinders and get new pistons (WSM). Cleaned up and lapped the valves. I also used bolt kits from Titan 757 and they "seemed" to be of a good quality.

Another question. The mating surface of the Rod and Rod cap look as if they were molded together and broken apart??? The mating surfaces are not machined to a smooth surface. Even though, the caps match up to the corresponding rod. I was going to use the rods, but I am now reconsidering.

Rods caps are molded together and then broken apart and must be reinstalled as a matched set.
Do not interchange the parts with other rods.

Also, most of your engine bolts are stretch bolts. This means they can not be reused and you can only torque them once. Once they are torqued, you should not reuse them. I used a Titan bolt kit that saved me a lot of money. And then I forgot to insert a timing chain retainer before torquing down some of the bolts and had to buy a second kit, saving me a LOT less money.

I just went back and looked. Most of the engine parts I used were WSM and I got a lot of them off ebay. Look on there for piston kits and top end rebuild kits that may save you some money if you need everything in the kit.

My total cost for engine rebuild (including boring out 0.5mm over), supercharger rebuild, jet pump rebuild, and trailer rebuild was about $2,700. Other than the machine shop I did everything myself and that includes tools as well.

Thanks, I actually remembered years ago, I ran into the same type of rods. Its great that they fit together like a puzzle.

Great advice, Thank you
