Hello, just looking for some advice. I’m hoping to try and rebuild a top end. Wondering what brand of micrometer would be best? I looked at an inexpensive one but one review said it was not very accurate. From the little bit of research I’ve done so far, I’m reading that Mitutoyo is a good brand? I was looking at the Mitutoyo model 103-218. It varies from 3” to 4”. Sells for 270.46. Would this be a good quality tool? Thank you

Go to Ebay and buy a used Mic. Starrett, Brown & Sharp, Mitutoyo. Are you looking at inside mics and outside? Generally we transfer the inside measurement to the outside mics. I see some good 3"-4" outside mics for less than $50 on Ebay.

i was hoping to get an outside micrometer and a dial bore gauge for the inside measurement. Mitutoyo had an outside 3 to 4” digital micrometer for 479.0” but there digital bore gauge was around 1300.00. I can’t see myself spending that kind of money in it. I’m thinking I may give Dave from Hurricane Performance a call and see what he would charge me to just measure the piston and bore when I need to. Especially since I have no experience doing this type of work, but really enjoy tinkering with these machines. I will have a look on eBay and see if I can get them used but if not I might be better off just taking them to be measured. They are only 20 minutes from me. Then I can use my money to buy smaller less expensive tools.

I’ve never used the micrometer, is it difficult to read the analog ones? I was going to buy digital whic is about 130.00 more than the analog. I’m a contractor so I’m used to a tape but wasn’t sure about reading thousandths

You can handle it. :) I sent you a private message. While I was looking for you some mics I bought a set of starrett inside mics for around $50 total. I see Outside mics for less than $50 as well. You can get as accurate with those as anything out there. I started in the Machinist Trade in 1976.... all this stuff is the same and I still use my original mics.
