Adding oil

Just got a used motor out of an SPX for my GSX that I bought just for the trailer, but now I want to put it back together. It is super clean with unknown hours on it.
It is one of those 787's with no oil plug for the balance shaft.I know that the factory assembled the engine with 1 ounce of oil from the get go.
Can I check it in any way and more importantly add if I need to?

not needed

believe or not, with all the rumbling around the gas/oil mix does, in the bottom end, it'll be enuf to lube the balance assy. Anyway, after about an 1hr or 2 of use, that oil, if able to aplly the 1oz, would have then seeped out, by that time...no seals to keep in that cavity.

Too much oil....

:agree: with timmy on this one. If you do not have the casing seperated, I'd probably not worry about it, unless you know it's been set upside down.

The only way to put the oil in this model engine is to remove the PTO cylinder. There is a hole about 1/8" in diameter that you would put that oil in. The normal running of the engine will help maintain that level. (This was research first done by Robin Savell Lloyd, a member).

There have been owners who thought they needed to put oil in that small chamber and when they did, they filled it up. Doing this creates to much friction on the cog gears and will either overheat and seize or blow the seal out.

Thanks for the info on adding oil.The guy that I bought this from says he replaced a crank bearing.
I guess that means he had the case apart and maybe the oil seeped out.I put it on it's side (rave side down, carbs up)is this bad?
It also does not turn over very smoothly. It has a spot that's tought to get by,but easy after then there's that spot again.
Any ideas?

Thanks, Greg

remove the raves, then turn motor again, if smooth, then you need to "shave" the raves back, if stick'n w/ raves out, then you need to pull the head and take a gander. should be smooth w/ w/out raves in and plugs out.
