A Review on the Sportster 4-Tec

Hello all,

Looking to buy a Sportster 4-tec....

I had a sportster 1800 twin 2 stroke.....nothing but a nightmare $$...its been sold..

I heard a lot of good things about the 4 Tec...

Also..is there anyone selling one..here on the forum ?
Or a reputably person elsewhere ....
Looking to have it shipped to Nova Scotia , Canada...

4-tec engines are very proven. You can get thousands of hours on them. I like the Super Charged version as it makes a substantial difference in performance.

I have a 2004 with 155hp engine and love the boat. It is very reliable, and maintenance is easy. I think you will be happily surprised at how nice it is to own one of these 4tecs after a frustrating time with your old 2-stroke.

As CoastieJoe mentioned, they are very reliable. The supercharged versions require a bit more specialized maintenance, than the N/A versions which are near bulletproof.

The big question is whether to go with the lower hp 155 or opt for the supercharged version. You don't need the larger engine, as the 155hp is plenty fast; but there are definitely times when I wish I had a supercharged motor. I don't think there is a boat owner out there who doesn't think he could probably use an extra hundred ponies from time to time.

I guess it all depends on how you plan to use the boat. If you plan to do a lot of towing with with it I would opt for one of the supercharged engines. If you just plan to use it for cruising around it is probably not worth the extra maintenance work.

I have noticed that the sportster/speedsters have become a bit scarce on the used market lately, so it may take some time to find a nice one.
